We had a blowout on the way home Sunday, so I'm now in the market for replacement tires on the van. I know I'm keeping the same size, but I'm am considering changing from the stock P235/75R15XL to a LT radial. The stock tires have a max capacity of 2138 lbs and the rear axle GWR is 3800 lbs. The only LT radials I can find in this size have a C load rating, and as far as I can tell that is only 1985 lbs capacity. Am I missing something? I would have thougth the LT radial would have more capacity that the stock P radials. Am I better off with the stock tires?

You're better off with the LT due to stiffer sidewalls a probly higher air pressure. The weight rating on the LT tires you posted is still more than your rear axle weight rating so either way, you're covered. Try different brands and models of LT tires in your size, not all tires have the same weight ratings even though they may have the same size.

Agree with going to an LT. I had Firestone Transforce on my Excursion. I really liked them. They make both an AT and HT. I think the HT had a less aggressive tread pattern.

don't be fooled by just looking at capacity only. The C load range has the stiffer/heavier sidewalls and more importantly better protection from sidewall damage from pot hole or just bouncing over the curb with a load and 4x4's truckers leave in the middle of the road. Also the LT tire is happier/cooler running with a heavy load with max sidewall pressues than the P tire.

I'm strongly considering the Firestone Destination A/T. They come in both LT235/75R15C and P235/75R15 108S. I've had Michelin LTX MS in the P radial and when I have the trailer hooked up and the van loaded for a trip the sidewalls are almost touching the ground. (I have had the rig on the scales and I am within my max ratings on all axles, but just barely.) I think I'm going with the LT's, if the advantage is stiffer sidewalls then I think that's what I need.
