Heading from So. Jersey dropping daughter off in Madison middle of August. Would like suggestions for routes and CGs up thru Wisconsin over the Upper Penninsula of Michigan and back down thru Michigan to head back to Philadelphia. We've been to Madison before but this is our first trip thru Wisconsin and Michigan. We have a 30' MH. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you just passing thru or could you spend a couple of days in Door County? If so, try the Path of Pines CG in Fish Creek.

Click on this link to Michigan State Parks by county, and you will find some real nice campgrounds, which I'm recommending only because I'm more familiar with them. The first question is, is time and distance a factor? If so, you'll probably limit your choices to those along Highway 2, but if not, go northwest to the Porcupine Mountains near Ontonagon, then to Fort Wilkins State Park Campground on the tip of the Keewenaw Peninsula, then along Lake Superior to Whitefish Point, and stay at Tequamenon Falls State Park, then south to Mackinac Island (pronounced Mackinaw) and/or the Big Mac Bridge and south on I-75 to the lower peninsula. In the lower peninsula, you might try Higgins Lake State Park, or Hartwick Pines State Park. At the south end of Michigan, just before Ohio (still near I-75) try Sterling State Park in Monroe County. I'm sure that others will have suggestions, but this will give you a starting point. All of the state park campgrounds are nice and scenic, but just be aware that they only have electricity at the sites - no water or sewer - except for a very few exceptions. You'll probably need to fill your freshwater tank on the way into the campground, and dump on your way out. Also, in addition to the campsite fee, you'll have to pay an $8 per day non-resident vehicle fee, or if you stay at several state parks, you may be better off getting a season pass that pays for itself in a few days. If you're pulling a toad, you'll have to pay for that as well. By the way, if you plan on going across Canada instead of Ohio, stay at Lakeport State Park north of Port Huron, and then take the bridge across to Sarnia and east. Have fun.

Thanks all for your help. I'm used to cheese steaks, scrapple, water-ice. We had our first "brats" last month and oh yeah the ice cream at UW but haven't tried the "cheese curds" yet. This will be our first time in that part of the country.

We just got back from UP of MI and Wisconsin. I would suggest getting up to US 8 in WI and stay at Summer Breeze in Iron Mountain and then take US route 2 to the bridge and 75. Great ride and you will enjoy the views.

We spent a week in Traverse Bay resort in Traverse Bay. Really upscale resort if so inclined.

ps Got my best fuel mileage ever on those routes (8 MPG!)

A friendly suggestion from a northern Wisconsin resident. From Madison I would consider going all the way up to Duluth/Superior and then working your way east along the south shore of Lake Superior which is the greatest of the Great Lakes. From Superior I would suggest hwy 13 east over to Bayfield to spend some time near the Apostle Islands. If you don't want to go all the way to Duluth, I would still suggest going all the way up to Bayfield. Bayfield is an awesome town with lots of history, sailing, kayaking, Orchards, and great dining opportunities. For Evening entertainment there is the Big Top Chataqua which has a variety of musical performances throughout the summer. We were just up there over the weekend and saw Bobby Vee and the Crickets which was an awesome show. From Bayfield take 13 down to U.S. 2 and head east through Ashland and into the UP. Before you get to Michigan take a break at Saxon harbor for some of the best rock picking available. Just down the road from Saxon Harbor there's a water falls that is very nice. In Michigan I would take the northern route on M-28 and suggest a stop at the Porcupine Mountains. From there on to Copper Harbor and over towards the Soo as previously suggested. When you go through Ishpheming a stop at Da Yoopers Tourist Trap is a good driving break with some good humor. The drive along the lake from Marquette over to Munising is nice. Munising is the start of the Pictured Rocks which is a great tour to take. There is also a shipwreck preserve in the barbor and Pete Lindquist at Shipwreck Tours runs a glass bottom boat for viewing the wrecks. Pete also does Scuba charters if you're certified.

Have fun, we're headed that way right after Labor Day.

If you time it right, you can hit the U.P. State Fair in Escanaba.
