My wife and I were thinking about traveling to Mount Airy on vacation . Is there enough to do and see in this area to spend a week there? Also what are the campgrounds like , any good ones?

Thanks

This is the home of the Andy Griffith show. THere is plenty to see and do. As for the campgrounds I have not camped there but I do remember there being several in the area. Should be an exciting trip. HERES
a link to the town. There are camping links off this.

Andy Griffith grew up there. Its a fun place to visit and pretty little town.
There is the diner where you can get a porkchop sandwich right beside Floyds barber shop. There is also a Andy museume thats full of old Mayberry history.
I never spent more than a day at a time there, I would think 2 days would be enough.

I dont know about the camping in Mt Airy but the Blue Ridge Parkway is only about 15 miles from there.

I doubt you could spend a week on the Andy Griffith/Mayberry type stuff in Mt. Airy. But there are quite a few other things to do in the area.

There are several wineries nearby that offer tours.

If you're interested in history, Old Salem in Winston-Salem is about a 45-60 minute drive and you could easily spend a day there.

There are plenty of walking/hiking opportunities along the Parkway and at Pilot Mountain State Park.

Mabry Mill, one of the most photographed/painted spots in the country, isn't far up the Parkway and well worth the drive, IMO.

If you enjoy canoeing or kayaking, the New River (which is actually believed to be the second oldest river in the world) isn't far away. There are a few canoe/kayak rental places around Galax, Virginia.

Horne Creek Historic Farm would probably be a nice place to visit. I haven't been there, but have always wanted to see it.

As far as campgrounds, if you're going in the summer, I'd consider the Fancy Gap KOA or one of the other campgrounds around Fancy Gap. It's much cooler and less humid up there than down in Mt. Airy.

I travel and work in the Carolinas. Mt. Airy is a relatively small town, best known for the association with Andy Griffith and it's history with Bluegrass music. Just realize it has no resemblance to the 'Mayberry' we saw on tv. Oh... it was a little nostalgic to visit the Snappy Lunch or breeze past Pilot Mountain (Mt. Pilot from the show). Both take about an hour to do combined, depending on how many pork chop sandwiches are ordered and the drive time... lol. Seriously though, it can be a fun day there.

Supposedly, there's a new CG in the area. I have no experience with it. Maybe one of the locals will respond. Considering the diversity of likes and dislikes, here's my suggestion...

Want to relax in nature with fishing, boating, swimming, and hiking at your front door? Try the COE parks, Bandits Roost and Warrior's Creek just west of Wilkesboro, NC. w/e. Want access to shopping, restaurants, movie theaters, Lowes NASCAR, etc. A city park, Oak Hollow CG, in High Point would be a good choice, FHUs & cable. Both areas are within an easy drive of Mt Airy/Pilot Mountain, camping fees virtually the same and have more to offer respectively. IMO.

We stopped through there one day traveling home from the south..

There was a fellow driving around town in an old sheriff's car and I swear he looked and acted just like Barney it was great!! He went in the drug store so I followed him in there...

My parents always taught me not to stare at people, but I just couldnt help myself...I wanted to say something to him but didnt want to feel like a total knucklehead.....It was GREAT!!

We stopped in the museum and talked to the lady that runs it...(if she is still there) she reminds you of aunt Bea and just as sweet as apples...The museum is very interesting..

As for a week, that would be a stretch, but like others said you can probably find other things in the area..

Hope that helps...

I go there all the time, great place, really friendly people. As for the pork chop sanwich it's really sweet I didn't like it at all It's a breaded porkchop
with a really sweet slaw on it. I prefur to eat at Leon's on the other end of town. I collect electric trains and there's a great shop called The Dry Bridge Station, if you are into trains.
