I'm talking, R&R, cost of the rebuild, & new hoses & belts, etc.
I'm sure several of you have had the experience & have some figures for me to compare to. Thanks

Never done it but you can get a complete rebuilt longblock for a 454 for $2,400 .. comes with a 3 yr, 36,000 mi warranty.

Purchased a pretty nice Airstream Classic a couple years back. PO, had a fresh engine installed; including a new radiator the total gouge was 8 grand, engine price was 2800, rest was labor and lots of extra 'stuff'The chassis had 120k miles at the time of the repower. Thankfully it has proved to be a good engine, that AS P-30 is a real rascal to work on.

When I used to do this for a living a few years back we were charging from $7k to $10k depending on how bad the core engine was and the necessary things it took to make it right again. Belts, hoses, pumps ect. Some of the more expensive ones we had to take off the front cap to be able to remove the engine.
Once it is done right and maintained properly it is good for another 100k +

A couple of years ago I had to replace the 454 in a 1985 Winnebago Chieftain - the engine "swallowed" a piston and the block was ruined. A rebuilt 454 installed including 2 new electric fuel pumps and reuse of all accessories (AC compressor, alternator and so on, belts and hoses were replaced) ran me just under $7000. I was lucky in that the shop was able to find a rebuildable engine for a very reasonable price. I would expect that depending on the cost of the rebuilt engine you could expect to pay between $8K & $10k. If you buy a crate engine or a long block the cost will be on the high side. Rebuilding your engine or purchasing a short block will put you on the lower side.

my father in law did one in his bounder last year at gm, cost him 9k with 3/36 warranty. sounds about right for a class a, the largest cost factor is the labor involved. unfortunately for him, he had just bought the coach from a private party and the motor blew on the way home. the dealer told him the engine blew because the fuel filter was plugged, sounds fishy to me.

At least two man-days labor for remove and replace. I the rebuild is a long block, another day to transfer "accessories" from your old engine to the new one. At $125 per hour, that's at least $3000 labor.
If your installation is more difficult, if you have to buy new engine parts because the old ones are not really worth transferring, you might double that, $6000 over the cost of the rebuilt motor.

I spent over 8 grand just for the motor, but this is a multiport fuel injected 502 crate motor. Figure 7 to 12 grand for a stock engine depending on the shop and area you live in.
You really need to factor in how long you plan to keep it or how long the shell will last. A new engine will put you upside down financially, however if you plan to keep the coach for a long time, you really will recoup the value out of a new engine. The concept of "investment" in a new motor is really an investment in your own future. It is not an investment in the value of the coach.
In that perspective, you need to ask yourself if your goal is to get by with minimal expense, extracting what ever value you get from RVing, for the minimal amount of investment, or do you "invest" in making your coach more enjoyable by adding more HP, from a high quality crate motor. In my case, the shell will last a long time, so we chose to keep the coach and go all out. I tow a very heavy Grand Cherokee, so investing in a significant amount of HP increase was a great value for me. It was also a case of matching the HP with the rest of the handling capability of the coach.
Nothing wrong with either philosophy, but just laying out the reasoning behind the choice.
