Are you trying to get longer leads so you can install your plugs??? Go to an electrical supply house (Nedco-Gray Bar-or the like). Thomas and Betts sells a tube type connecter that can be used on 120 volt. Get a couple good for the size wire that is there and some wire of the same gage. Make sure you crimp the real good.Once you've done that cover it all with a Heat Shrink.

Do you belive you have a short because the gfci is tripping? I'm not clear on what the problem really is.

To determine if the short is before the gfi, take the gfi out, clear the ends of all wires that were connected, then turn the circuit breaker on at your main distribution box. If it trips, then you do have a short. If thats the case, kill the box with your mains, remove and take the wiring loose from that breaker and see if it still trips. Then look at that wire, which is now loose at both ends with a volt/ohm meter and see if it shows short. You very well may have some recepticals and appliances b4 you get to the gfi. If so, you will need to isolate those, one by one. I doubt very seriously that the actual short is in the wire, most likely in a switch or receptical.
If you are not electrically minded, you may be better off calling an electrician. Mice love the insulation on electrical wiring, If one has ate through on a live wire, you should start smelling it pretty quick.
