Boy - my first experience with those things and my impression is all negative.

Someone earlier noted that the plastic jobs can be purchased at one of the local building supply places - Lowes or?

In the meantime - has anyone managed to find a better more suitable and longer lasting substitute for those things? I have replaced over a dozen thus far - they seem to be getting "brittle" with age and I cannot keep up replacing them.

Surely - there's something better!

God Bless

Bill

Check some of the independent hardware stores, or ACE Hardware stores as they have ones made of brass. Brass latches came with our American Eagle and have little problems with them. I, like you dislike the "plastic" hardware.

Yep, they do get brittle and break. I finally bought a bunch from Monaco. When these run out, I might look at metal replacements as well.

Bill, my foretravel came with brass latches that you can adjust with a screwdriver for tension. They are easy to install too. Looks like a little u shape with two barrel sides and a prong with a couple of dents on the sides that slide in.

No. And I can't imagine WHY. No real $practical$ latch avail. handles MH forces and people have tried nearly everything. I put 'ScreenDoor' hook and eye on the biggies. Yuck. Sorry situation. TOM

Never looked at ours before but they are plastic as well. They look fairly robust, black plastic and actuated by a spring mechanism. So far, no problems with them. They open an close with a feel of precision.

Any older Newmar owners have problems with their latches? (ours is 2007 MADP)

Mine are also plastic, have not had a problem, they are pretty durable looking, broke one last week, daughter-in-law put tooooo much stuff in a draw and a belt broke the latch, was easy to repair. Only one I have had a problem with. There are a couple of access holes with covers that have the same latches to hold them in place, I just switched them out.

    Happy RVing

I bought some spares this spring from the Beaver factory service center in Bend and they are made from nylon, not plastic.

Not to get technical, but Nylon is a semi-crystalline plastic.

Good thing you kept the old MH Bill, You seem to be finding lots of problems for a pre owned coach. My Safari has metal on all catches. No problems. One reason I am not looking to trade or buy up, I know what I have now, and have worked all the bugs out. I think that you will have quite a bit of that in any coach you get, new or used.
