i have class A with 4K genset...live off grid 99.9% of time...recharge 4 series 24's with 3 stage xantrex outboard charger...it starts at 40 amps and of course drops amp input as batteries take charge...
i wanted to get quieter 1k honda or yamaha gen/inverter...they only output about 8.3 amps at 120...my charger requires 8.7 amps to start with at 40 amp charge rate...
what would the problems be with this setup???
would my charger then start with lets say 37 amps???
would the genset shut down???
any thoughts....

If your batteries are extremely low it can overload the 1000 W generator. When that happens to me I start the big engine for a few minutes to catch up or start the big generator for 20 minutes.Just be sure when you first plug into the generator you have the eco mode off so the little critter is running full tilt. Once you are connected and things are running fine, flip the eco switch back on and you can then hear when the generator slows down that your batteries are coming up nicely.

Slight problem as the genset only outputs 900 watts on it's continuous rating or 7.5 amps. The genset will run at draws between 900 and 1000 watts but depending on the genset's mood as to how long before it trips into over load. The spec's say 30 minutes but we've had them trip out in just a couple of minutes with loads measuring near 1000.

Why not just get the Honda eu2000i instead of the 1,000 watt model, then you will have power to operate things while charging. I never did like running anything at maximum capacity.

2003 Jayco 308fbs eagle 33' tt, towed by a 2003 Ram 3500 slt, quad cab dually, cummins diesel ho, trailer towing package, with 6 speed manual. Hauls better 1/2, 3 kids, myself, and a 2003 ez go clays car.. I have added so far, neon lights, clearance lights, back up lights, black light, lift kit, mud tires, and everything necessary to make the golf cart street legal. It's now ready to spend the winter in the garage for more mods. More neon, strobe lights, alarm, a pa system, maintance, and whatever else that comes along. This golf cart does wheelies and travels thru 7 inches of mud when need be. Two honda eu2000i gens twinned to supply the electrical power. Latest addition an 04 Honda Goldwing. i of course knew i could get bigger gennies, but for reasons of size, weight and life style the 1,000 is best in my situation...
my tv is dc and all i ever use 4K for is to run charger....
i dont want to mess with inverters or converters etc...just simple battery charging with outboard charger...

How far down are the batts when this occurs? Depending on your charger, it is possible that if you did not run your batteries down quite as far, the 1000 might be able to handle it. The 1000 is pretty quiet, so you could charge more often without making any enemies. See what JAuguston has done to make his even quieter.

bill..my batteries soc when i start everyday is in the 70-85% range...i was wondering if maybe i should start charger set at 20 amps and after a time switch to 40 amps..by that time maybe they will require less than 40 so i wont need as much from genset,,,
because i dont run them down so far, they only take the 40 amps for a few minutes anyway

Wonder no more,.....if you can turn down the rate of charge, just do it. I will be doing exactly the same thing w/ the Honda 1000, only I'll be using the manual control on the charge wizard to lighten the load for a few minutes if need be.

I too don't want a bigger, heavier, 2000 watt generator that will spend 95% of its life running at less than 1/2 its capacity.

I struggled with the choice between a 1000 and 2000 watt Honda. My wife got tired of my trying to get by on the cheap with a 1000 Honda and insisted that I go ahead and get the 2000 Honda. I did and I have to manage my startup with the 2000 Honda because the surge of my convertor charging puts it in overload. After 10 minutes, the 2000 handles it just fine.
Remember bigger is better. You won't regret it, trust me.

What charger model is that exactly? I honestly think the 1000 will power 40 amps of charging. Have you measured the actual amp input? Consider a Xantrex XADC40 converter/charger.
