I'm considering using the camper shell on my Dodge Ram to do some limited camping in the southeast U.S., and would like to investigate the feasibility of installing some sort of air conditioning unit.

First of all, does there exist a quiet, portable generator that would supply enough power to run a small A/C unit?

The Honda EU2000i is generally considered the best small, quiet generator that is capable of running up to a 10K BTU AC unit.

a Honda portable generator (2000i) will run the smallest of the RV type AC's such as the Coleman Polar Cub. It will run some of the larger AC's (13.5) but just barely and sometimes not at all. A 5200 BTU window unit would be by far the cheapest solution if you could figure out a way to mount it temporarily (or permanently). An RV type rooftop unit will cost about $600 and you would have to make sure your shell could handle the weight (about 100 pounds) A honda 2000 generator will run about $900. Good luck

I have no idea about "quiet gensets!" Mine is not quiet!

FWIW: I have a twin bunk in my cap. I have slider windows in both my Silverado and the cap, AND an inflatable "TRUK BOOT" sealing both from outside air. While this may sound off-the-wall, I have a 4" RV furnace hose I attach with velcro to the main below-dash A/C outlet, and run it through the sliders to the cap.

With the TV A/C set on "re-circulate," I can take the curse off the cab and cap temp in a matter of 5-10 minutes, which is more than enough to also reduce the RH and let me get to sleep! It's worked like a champ for over 12 years when I'm traveling with just the TV.

Just make sure exhaust CO doesn't get to you!

Thanks for the replies, guys. Rigging up a window unit is kinda what I had in mind. I'll look into the Honda 2000i gensets.

J,
Let me see if I understand you correctly - you're letting your truck engine run all night?
