DH and I love camping and go as often as we can. Generally speaking, we go to State Parks, but sometimes just want the atmosphere of a smaller, quieter campground. Don't get me wrong, we love to camp with our 6yr old grandson and usually go to CGs that appeal to him, with lots of stuff to keep him (and us) busy. We enjoy people and are friendly but, we'd like to find the smaller, out of the way places for a change. Any info or ideas are greatly appreciated! We need to stay in our state of Georgia.

Check for county parks in your area. Around here there is 3 county parks and they are not advertized.

Have a great time camping,

Our favorite is Hester's Ferry, a COE CG I grew up camping in with my Mom and Dad. It is out of the way with sites that are large but, not very level. We have to take a board or two to get level from side to side. Water and electric only but there is a dump station in the CG.

It is about 17 miles from Lincolnton, GA and the nearest country store is 4 miles.

It might seem cumbersome, but we use Trailer Life's directory on our computer. We zoom into an area, note the campgrounds, move the cursor over a CG and note the info shown off to the side. We can readily see the specs / features for the particular CG.

I understand your question. We lived in Nga for almost 5 years, and sure got tired of the state and fed parks. The gems in rving are hard to find. We used to get in the car and drive for hundreds of miles, checking out private owned rv parks, small and mom and pop types, but found them to be the best. Every lake in Ga has rv parks, private , small, mom and pop parks and they are the backbone of the rv crowd.
Take a day off some day, drive around and make notes of the parks you find. 99 percent do not advertise in anything. Take in an rv rally sometime and listen to the members, most of them know about the gems. They are hard to find, but when you do, you found something.
