I don't know about OHIO but in New York there is no charge if you don't have them mail you a statement every month. They will post you statement on the internet and email you a statement. They do require a charge card and will take out like twenty dollars at a time. We also get a discount at the toll for useing it. JM2Cents Bill

We have SmartTag/EasyPass through the state of VA. The transponder is accepted throughout the North Eastern states and Illinois (and now Indiana). When we got ours, you did not have to be a resident to get one. You should know that some states charge an annual fee for it but VA does not. You can get a Smart Tag from VA by calling: 877-762-7824. See also: www.EZPassVA.com and www.smart-tag.com

I have one for the MH that identifies it as a 2 axel heavy vehicle (that designation is required by some of the member states) and one for the toad that identifies it as a car. When I go through a toll booth, charges for each vehicle are registered separately. I checked my charges for the 1st few times I used SmartTag in VA, NY and PA and they were recorded correctly.

I have found it VERY conventent on the PA Turnpike and NY State Thruway for avoiding long lines at the toll booths. (PA has especially onerous exit lines). I gave them my credit card number when I signed up and they "fill up" my account whenever it goes below $35 credit balance. I have had a SmartTag in VA since it became available about 10 years ago and never had an accounting error with them

I have an EZ Pass account. When I called to get another tag for my motorhome,I told the clerk that it was a motorhome and it was a SeaBreeze. When I got the tag the paperwork said that it was a SAAB. So for the last four years I've been paying the same rate as a car. Never had a problem yet.

I have EZ Pass for my cars through the PA Turnpike Commission. They require a reasonable deposit for each tag. I attempted to get one for the motorhome and they wanted to treat it like a commercial vehicle. The deposit was $500!!! I now get a ticket and pay cash. If towing, I usually remove the tag.

One time I forgot to remove the tag from the toad. When I got to the booth, it was smart enough to read the motorhome and the toad. I may attempt to try this again in the future by letting the toad's tag pay the toll for both vehicles.

There is a toll road near Toronto, Canada that has a toll road with no toll booths. It just takes a photo of your license plate and send a bill in the mail. My S-I-L has never had to pay, because his trailer plate is inside the rear window.

Our extended camping family runs all over the country in various types of RV's.
It got to the point that some states registered the correct amount of axles, others didn't, some required dual transponders and if we took them into a state where they correctly did the axles we ended up with an extra charge (which they took off, but it was a real pain going through the automated phone system to get someone to actually take the charge off).
So we as a group decided to just carry two transponders. One for a coach and on for a toad; and leave the toad one in the foil bag unless we were day tripping with it and if the states couldn't come up with the right amount of axles that was their problem.

We also heard rumors that Florida's IIRC called Sunline transponders are going to be incorporated into the larger system, but no dates.
Anyone heard anything more?

Gabjam and Rocket Heart, This is exactly what I'm getting. When I 1st called PA Turnpike It was simple once I had the Car transponder but when I called back for the MH, seems everyone wants to make me a commercial vehical. They keep transfering me to commercial. I'll keep trying till I can find someone who knows something. I wish I can remember who I talked to 1st.

In TX we have a tag on the TOAD only. When we tow the TOAD we do nothing different. Yes, we trip the violation sensor. The review shows the TOAD tag and they charge for the front vehicle. Have been doing this for 5 years with no problems.

Initially, we went through the manned gates and were charged for both vehicles and the TOAD sensor also activated. --3 vehicle charges -- That procedure stopped quickly.

We have two cars registered and also listed motor home on account. I take the one out of car we are leaving home and place in Motorhomes and leve one in the toad. Works fine in all EZ PASS areas but many times just charges passenger car rates for the Motorhomes and the toad. Both transponders register a toll. The only time it charges correctly for the combined unit is when we are forced to go thru a manned booth.

I called the state of Illinois and the clerk said not to worry about it because the open road tolling lanes cannot distinguish the Motorhomes from a passenger car. Go figure!
