My wife and I are considering buying a 29 ft 2005 class C Sunseeker. My wifes parents have always been campers starting in a tent and working their way up to their current class A, so she's more excited about the possible purchase than I am. I am also interested in being able to explore the country with our son, but one of my bigger concerns is being limited to only RV parks and campgrounds. To me it seems that when you get to your location, you park your RV and there you are. What do you do when you want to travel around the area and see the sites? I don't own a small car that I could tow and I don't really want to buy one either. I would really appreciate some of your thoughts and experiences to help ease my worries. Thanks

First welcome to the forum.
Do you own a truck that could pull a travel trailer or fifth wheel? In that case you always have the truck for excursions.

We had a older Class A with no smaller vehicle to tow. As much as we enjoyed driving & using it with all the features, it just wasn't working for vacations where there were sites to see outside of the cg or park. So instead of investing another vehicle, we upgraded one of the SUVs we had to a truck & bought a tt. Is that the right option for you? I don't know, but it worked for us & we have more room in the trailer than the old Class A. Perhaps go look at some tt & see what you like, find a price range, discuss a tv & price & see how that all compares to the price of the class c you are looking at.

We have a 31' Class C and I don't hesitate to drive it anywhere. We will break camp and take the MoHo to any destination. Drove it through Yellowstone/Rapid City last summer, in and around Omaha the year before, plus many places in between. We are going to Orlando in October and I will drive it everywhere I need to go...the worse case scenario...rent a car when you get to your destination.

I purchased a 150cc scooter for local trips after we set-up. Also, I have rented a car.
Have a great time camping,

You have it figured out.... you don't want to do this. If you don't bring along a car it is a bit unreasonable to expect to tour the area in a 29 foot 10 foot high vehicle. Length and height will keep you out of a lot of places... a scooter for 3 people won't work either.
Why do you want a class C??? Plates, insurance and poor fuel economy.
A truck??? Multiple use.... trailer??? and / or 5er??? Truck Camper.... a multi use vehicle.

Plates, insurance and poor fuel go along with either choice.
Only thing the TC (truck camper) and a Class C have above a TT or 5'ver is the towing aspect (boat, vehicle, trailer, etc.).
Truck camper able to leave camper off/separate unit, but you do loose storage area and security compared to a C. No need to leave cab to go to the back.
Length is debatable. A TC/truck combo can be darn close in the lengths of a shorter class c. Height can be more & ground clearance can be better......
decisions, decisions, decisions.........

Thank you all for your replies.
We do own a GMC Yukon so the idea of a travel trailer sounds a little more reasonable. The reason we considered a class C in the first place was so our son could have the bunk area above the cab and so we could tow our boat on our fishing trip to Canada. I know, I didn't mention the boat, but that one trip to Canada is the only fishing/camping trip we take (so far) and we probably could get by using a tent like we currently do. It's not so bad when your in-laws are parked across the street in a 31' class A
It's obvious that we still have a lot to think about and some more shopping around to do. Thanks again to everyone for their comments and advice. I look forward to any more stories or advice anyone would like to provide on both travel trailers and motorhomes.

I also have the same C you are looking at. Once you get use to it, you will fell comfortable in driving it just about anywhere. I still am trying to get use to the switch into a Class A, but it coming. Buy the way, mine's for sale.

Some campgrounds are located near public transportation or have free trolley service. With a Class C you can also just unhook and take off for the day. We usually plan ahead and then decide if we need a tow, use public transportation or rent a car as needed. Last week in Lake Placid, we did not bring a tow because my son and his family were joining us mid week, so we planned all our distant exploring for when they arrived. If they were not coming, then we would have brought the tow.
See you on the road!
