I think our Department of Homeland Security is more afraid of a plot by it's own citizens to overthrow the government to get rid of all the dead brain cells in Washington than they are of a threat from foreigners.

I still haven't forgiven the US border agents for confiscating my California oranges on one of our trips south. And if they considered CALIFORNIA oranges a risk, I've no doubt my laptop with these RV.NET posts would be considered a threat too.

Still can't figure out why they left the South American grapefruit but took the oranges ... not to mention the bananas.

I hope that everyone who says they have nothing to hide and don't mind them searching, will be the first to allow them to search their homes when we get to that point. Don't think that it won't get that far. We still have a constitution in this country. It is a shame that the people don't protect it anymore.

Next you see them confiscating cell phones because they can not prove who you have called and think you are a terrorist. The US Government is definitely killing their tourist trade fast. This is the #1 reason to not enter the USA.

I believe that in Germany, the Department of Homeland Security was called the "Gestapo". The US D of HS, like the Gestapo is becoming a law upon itself and eventually won't have to answer to anyone. It's even conceivable that it could arrest the President of the United States if it felt that the President did or said something that they deemed subversive.

I occasionally do programming work in secure facilities. At one location my laptop needed to be examined. Before entering, security personnel installed a utility on my computer. Then I went in and did the work. When leaving, another utility was used, which showed every changed file on the computer. The original utility was uninstalled. The process took a total of an hour.

When taking my laptop into a secure facility I understand and accept the reasons for the inspection. But when bringing my laptop back into the country that I am a citizen of it is a gross violation of privacy rights. Excuse me, the privacy rights outlined in the constitution which is being eroded.

Since when can a file on my laptop contain harmful information that is not available via FTP? How many rights are we going to continue to give up in the name of increased security? Habeous corpus is gone, they can label you a terrorist and squirrel you away. Phone companies have essentially been pardoned for illegal wire tapping. There is no doubt in my mind that my surfing activities are being logged. Would you feel entirely comfortable surfing for the "Anarchist's Cookbook". I'm confident that surfing to certain categories of websites will add your name to watch lists.

Even if I had suspicious information on my computer, what harm could I cause at the border crossing? I can hit you over the head with a laptop with or without sensitive information on its hard drive!

As I see it we've got a few choices.

1. To bring or not bring a laptop.
- I like having one for downloading photos on the road. Maybe creating an album.
- Keeping in touch with family and friends.
- Logging events of our trip, especially on a long trip.

2. To go along with the laptop being searched or give it up at the border.

Actually, I think in the future, I may do a lot of deleting of previous trips before I cross over.

But I'm not sure. Perhaps, I should keep on as is. After all there are those full-timers whose laptop is there permanent computer. & if we all carry on as normal, the 'potential danger' of finding something on a laptop may come to be viewed as a waste of time.

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Going up and coming back a few weeks ago we were never even asked if we had a laptop.Taking a laptop without a GOOD REASON should be a crime in itself.My Father & Grandfather fought for our Freedom.Vote for somebody besides good ole boys McCain & Obama before we have to fight again.{Vote is the safest way to say IT}

Consider this.

Someone hacks into a website and replaces one of the periods at the end of a sentence with a picture of kiddy porn taht is displayed as a single pixle. What you see is a single dot. However the full image is in your browser cache.

You are unknowingly in violation of law. Try explaining that one away. No one should be examining the contents of anyone's browser cache just because they feel like it.

You have very little control over wha is in your browser cache, other than to either empty it frequently or never surf the web.
