On our way home from our last trip the AC shut off. I asked someone to check it and they said the fan was blowing only a little bit.

After I got home, I started testing it. I found if I put a meter to the genny output, I was only getting 60-85 volts. Lights would still turn on, but were dim and flickering.

I have a 1992 Onan 4kw Emerald Plus.

I plan to call my local Onan service center.

Thanks for your help.

Maybe the voltage regulator. Best to call Onan as you stated.

I called them. They suggested that and also the brushes. I can check the brushes if I knew where they were. Im not sure how easy they are to locate.

I think on that model you have two breakers on the genset. Turn them both off and back on.That model should not run without full AC voltage output. The brushes are on the gen-end under a black plastic cover.

Model # 4BGEFA26109H. Emerald Plus 4000

I found 2 circuit breakers in my parts book. They looked like the self resetting type. It was not a switch type breaker, more like a small black box with 2 connections on it.

the breakers if there should be just to the right of your start panel, right under the air clearner box? mine is a 5k and has 2 a 30 and a 20, if one trips i have some power, and the gen. will surge wildly, if both trips i have no power at all w/it running normal. trying to run both a/c's on super hot days is where i have my problem.

who left the light on? is it me or are we leaning downhill. where did the dog run off to

I will look at that today. I also have ordered a service manual for this unit. That should be in soon.

I found only one breaker. It was not tripped. I did turn it off and back on a few times and it appears to be working fine.

Im service manual should be in today.

I got my manual yesterday and tried a few things. I was able to look at the brushes and slip rings. The brushes were kinda stuck in the brush block. I was able to free them up and clean the slip rings as instructed. I reassembled everything and began to test. I did get better than 90 VAC for a short time, then it went back down to 50-60 range.

Thats about the extent of my ability on generators at this point. Time to seek professtional service. Hope that wont be an arm or a leg.
