I got a second opinion from another genny repair shop, and they gave me a similar story. It just didnt cost me $350 to find out it was dead like the first shop charged me.

Well since then, I have done a lot of looking. I have found many new gennys for $2k that will meet or exceed my requirements. I have been looking at Generac Primepact and Quietpact units. The Primepact is simialar to what I already have. Its a genset without a case. The Quietpact is one in its own enclosure, muffler included in that enclosure. Most of these places offer free shipping and all the accessories needed to install it.

Im still in the data gathering stage.

Any further input would be appriciated.

I cannot tell you if the generac units are good or bad.But as a general rule Generac is one to stay away from. Parts are very costly hard to find anyone to work on them. Factory support is poor at best.

Don't always believe with the Cummins Onan service center tells you. They did a test on my unit cause it wouldn't start and the voltage regulator was good so they said it had to be dropped and it best case the brushes would have to be cleaned to the tune of 600.00 to 800.00 for R&R and cleaning. Worse case the Rotor Stator would have to be replaced for 2400.00. I ended up taking it somewhere else and low and behold it ended up being the fuel filter. Of course it took this shop a month and replacing every other part known to man to realize it was the filter. At least they didn't throw my old parts away. That could have been a very expensive fuel filter...

If you are planning on replacing the existing genset, consider a Honda.

Honda makes a radiator cooled RV genset, either 6500 or 6800 watt, don't remember which. Well made, reasonably priced and like all the Honda stuff got good support.

Agree with Billy, that Generac stuff is something I'd stay away from, a long ways away. You might get it at a slightly better price on the front side but when you need service or repair, get ready to empty your wallet.

Thanks for the info. Currently I have a Generac standby genny for my house. I have had this unit for several years with no issues. Its an 8500 watt with a 16 B&S engine.

Since you mentioned the Honda generators, I found this one (Honda RV EV4010). It would be a good replacement for what I have. However, its around 1,000 more than the Generac's I have been pricing, plus shipping and remote control panel. I agree that Honda power is probably one of the best out there.

My typical genny use is around 100 hrs per year.

I will be making a decision on this later this week.

As for the current condition of my unit, the engine does run fine, its in the generator half that is bad.

One thing I do not understand. It will run yet you cannot get full power out if it.I have been with Onan since 1980 and only know of one motor home unit that will run with out Full AC voltage. I would go back and check your output at the leads to the breaker from the stator. Things just don't add up.

I was told that the rotor and stator are bad. The only testing I felt confortable with was testing the resistance of the rotor. It has to read be 20 and 24 ohm. Mine reads 5.6 ohms. From what I know, thats almost complely shorted.

The currect AC output is 50-60VAC.

UPDATE: I replaced the genny with a Generac 40G. It works perfect. The install was fairly easy too.
