I just came back from Huntington West Virginia, and gasoline prices along the I-64 and I-77 corrodor was averaging from $3.95 to $3.99. When I crossed over into Virginia, the gasoline prices were running $3.59 to $3.65. I know that sometimes fuel is more expensive the farther you get off the pipeline, and it's sometimes more expensive where there is no "competition" among several stations at an interchange, but these prices were within 5 cents of each other all throughout the state. Is that $.30 increase in price all taxes there?

WV's gas tax is almost 14 cents higher than VA. That's about half of the difference.

That's pretty curious, considering KY borders with WV on the opposite side, and KY's price is about the same as VA's. Talonguy said the price reflects $.14 higer taxes, but what about the other $.16 or so?

West Virginia has always paid more for fuel than other states with the exception of California possibly. Our taxes are higher! We have an oil refinery on the Ky/Wv border 8 miles from Huntington but yet Huntington prices will be a few cents more than other cites within the border of WV. Figure this one out! Taxes are supposed to increase again in the coming months so as the price of crude and gas prices drop, the politicans will increase tax so the price will be the same!! This problem will not go away so after the election we had better hold on to the seat of our pants!!!

You can see a great color-coded map of average gas prices at gasbuddy.com. There's often quite a contrast between the main colors of neighboring states, which reflects state-based tax differences. It's a very handy reference for any trip that involves crossing state lines, so you can decide which state to buy your gas in. The price index key changes over time, but the state colors (i.e., their relative prices) stay about the same.
