This is such a basic question, I hate to ask but I don't know the answer. I have recently purchased a Class A and have my toad ready to tow. I purchased a used tow bar and there was no owners manual. I hooked up the toad to another vehicle to check it out and the bars remained fully extended the whole time I was pulling the toad. I was under the impression that the bars should partially close. Even at slow speed(20 mph) the toad would sway side to side. What am I doing wrong?

What brand and model tow bar?

I am not aware of any that do not stay fully extended while towing.

The tow bar arms stay locked when towing. When your first start pulling the toad, the tow bar arms will extend and lock into fully extended length. When you are unhooking the tow bar, there should be a lever or locking collar that will need to be lifted or pulled back to release the tow bar arms so they can retract back into the tubes.
Hope this helps.

It sounds like the pins on the bars were not locked. List the manufacture of the bars and someone with the same can give you the answers. I wouldn't be pulling it till you know for sure. It should straight behind you without swaying. JMHO Bill

Bars should indeed stay fully extended. If it's a Blue OX, they will service it for you. Send it to them and they fix it and send it on back.

Call the manufacturer of the tow bar to have them service it before you pull it another foot!

You're looking for trouble the way it is.

I have a Blue OX tow bar, and the bars are supposed to be fully extended and locked when towing. If they are not locked the toad will not follow the MH, and you could have a dent in the car. The height of the MH tow hitch vs the height of the car tow bracket should be level to 4" below the MH hitch height above ground when level. You can buy hitch drops to adjust that if needed' Here is some info from Blue OX http://www.blueox.us/instruction/towingphysics101.htm

Please post make and model of tow bar, toad and MH.
While doing this check the elevation of tow bar between the toad and MH. It should be close to level. 4 up and 6 down rings a bell. Excessive elevation change can cause problems.
Light suspension on some toads with a toad mounted tow bar can cause problems.

Just a thought. Make sure you unlock the steering wheel so the front tires can turn freely.
