I have cashed American Express travelers checks all over north America for forty years, as recently as a couple of weeks ago in Ohio(KOA) Cedar Point.
Have never had a problem.
You must make sure that the checks are issued in American funds.

Just got back from a month in Canadian Rockies so this is a very late entry.
We used Visa and Master Card just about everywhere. Even used it to get money at a laundermat. We DO take Traveler Cheques with us in order to get cash (have to do laundry or purchase small items from time-to-time so we need some cash).
If you go to a bank, not a currency exchange, you can get Canadian money, along with the differential, at NO fee. We did this at several banks in Banff and Jasper. The banks did specifically ask if the cheques were American Express --- apparently, that is the universally accepted form for which they do not charge. I found out, while standing in line, that they charge for other cheques (non American Express). So, that may apply to you.
Had no problem with credit cards other than they charge a fee (which they did not used to do) to convert foreign currency. That shows on your statement for the month, not at time of transaction.

I think the last time we were charged a fee for using our American Express travellers cheques was in Europe - we have also been charged a fee in Cuba. We no longer use them - not necessary with the convenience of ATM and WalMart.
