I was reading about the rain tires NASCAR ran in Montreal two weeks ago and was surprised to read that Goodyear made all of them in 1999! They have been stored in a climate controlled environment all this time. They said that they are reaching their safe limit for age in storage and will likely be destroyed and replaced next year.

I know not the same as a truck tire, but I guess this definitely brackets how long you can safely store them in a climate controlled environment - 10 years!

I don't think you can draw any concusions from this whatsoever.

The only similarities between the two are that they are black and round.

Racing tires are made of different material than your trailer and vehicle tires. Most normal tires are stored in warehouses out of the sun light which does the most damage.

Climate controlled in this case would mean in a controlled temperature, humidity, completely dark and non-oxygen environment. Has no comparison to real world. A tire company would only do this with limited run, low volume very specialty tire as with rain tires for NASCAR.

Most people on this Forum would lead you to think nine months of storage materially changes the value of a tire, much less nine years. I seriously doubt you will find anyone who works with tires to agree but there are "talking heads" on TV that seem to know better than those actually involved.

You know, I have my experiences with old tires and you won't believe them, but they are in line with around 5-6 years.

But what settles it for me is this. In 02 when I had a goodyear workhorse tire come apart on my class C and do $5k worth of damage, it was 4 months from being expired per the DOT stamp on the tire. Goodyear paid to repair my RV, had it been one month after the 5 year limit I am told Goodyear would not have paid. I also contacted my insurance company at the time (Progressive) and they stated that they would also cover the damage because the tires were not old. But the same story.

The advantage in my mind is that I don't have to hire a lawyer and fight a tire company or an insurance company if I follow their rules. Since I am not made of money, its just eaiser for me to follow the rules and replace the tires when required, even if they look great. Heck I can even sell them to someone else on ebay who doesn't share my same concerns.

Don't take your organs to heaven. Heaven knows we need them here.

I agree in principle except we then caution those prospective buyers of a "leftover" 07 MH as they might have Lot Rot. Same can and should be said for tires. The newer the manufacturer date and the more responsible storage employed gives me the better odds of getting the best tire for my money. and yes I'm the guy that buys the milk with the longest dates for the very same reason. A properly stored 9 month old tire should be fine, but how we determine that they were properly stored? And not in some back lot being crushed by fellow tires in inventory and baking in the sun for 3 or6 of those months. At least if I buy a recent tire and it has been stored as above the effects should be reduced.
