The internet service (DSL) that we have is getting less and less satisfactory so I am thinking of switching to broadband. We already have Alltel cell phone service that while not great at our home, is generally workable. When we go to TX for the winter, I have to pay for internet service there while continuing to pay for the service at home, so am thinking that broadband would be cheaper in the long run. Because our cell phone service is 2 bars at most, would broadband be a workable choice?

Alltel and Verizon maybe merging. We have Verison wireless cell and Aircard. When we have two bars on cell we are stronger on the aircard.
Haven't had problems with aircard through much of the country.

I don't know if themerger is having any effect, but I have seen an increase in my Verizon aircard.
We've had Alltel for several years and its been very workable for us. I went to Verizon for an aircard and the only disappointment was that I only got national access at home, where my Alltel had EVDO and five bars.
Sometime in late July my aircard at home suddenly went to 2 bars out of 4 with broadband access?

I have asked about AllTel air cards here many times and not got an answer from anyone traveling with them.
I too have AllTel for the cells but I think I am going with Verizon.
The only advantage they offer is that if you pay full price for the air card there is no contract.

Alltel was acquired by Verizon several months ago and their services will merge right after the first of the year (DS works for Alltel). We have Alltel air card and it works great. We used it extensively in the RGV last winter, as well as all the other places we've been. Anywhere you get a cell signal, the air card works.

That deal has not yet been approved. Maybe about March of next year.
Right now Srint is a partner of Alltel where they don't have towers.

My wife purchased us an air card for our laptop a few months ago. She works for Alltel in the Corporate office in Little Rock, AR., so she was able to swing a sweet deal. We have used it quite a bit and have had no problems anywhere we've been. It picks up anywhere there is cell service. It also has nationwide usage without any roaming charges(not sure if this is a special package or not).
Our card is fast and reliable that I have considered getting rid of the cable internet service that we have at home!
