Unfortunatly, building trucks for people that dont need them has long been a large segment of the truck market.

Agreed, but GM's (and all the others building half ton trucks) problem now is that folks are realizing they don't need them. And they aren't buying.

IMHO, the gain in fuel economy is not great enough to go to a truck with at 3.08 rear end. I cannot imagine towing with that ratio. Getting the trailer rolling as well as keeping it rolling would be a major problem. How on earth did they come up with a 7000# towing capacity.

easily done with a 6 speed transmission. 1st gear and second can be geared lower. The rear on my Titan with Tow package is 3.34 and it pulls like a beast. Nissan says its 5 speed transmission is similar to a 4 speed with 4.10 gears, because the overall ratio in the first few gears are the same.

3.08 axle ratio, better areodynamics, soft tonneau cover, lower ride height, 2wd only, lower chin spoiler, and even a few more hp/tq. This is NOT a hybrid.

15city/21hwy rated, up from 14/20 for the regular 5.3L V8.

Tow rating drops to 7000#.

That's what I was thinking. Last time didn't they call it the Buick Roadmaster?

OTOH I had a Chevy 15 years ago that got better mileage than that with a 4.3 2wd half ton.

Remember folks, the EPA is using a new, tougher mpg test as of 2008 models. Personally, I never had a problem getting my OLD EPA highway numbers, so I expect that with a bit of attentive driving it will be easy to top the new EPA rating in real life freeway cruising at 65 mph.

Those numbers aren't all the exciting. My '07 Tahoe 4x4 with 4.10s is rated at 15/20.

2007 Dodge Ram 3500 SRW,4x4,Cummins 5.9, 6spd.
2007 Keystone Cougar 289BHS Fifth Wheel.

Excellent point. You can go to fueleconomy.gov to see the old and new numbers on older vehicles.

Partially yes. Partially no. Some of us who need and use trucks do not need to carry as much as others. I use the bed of the little Ranger all the time.
Brush and Leaves to transfer station, construction debri from home remodel to the dump, plywood, drywall etc from the home center. None of it will fit in the DW's mini SUV but will fit in the little truck.
Crew cab that could pull a slightly larger trailer and get better gas milage then the Ranger? Seriously worth considering.

Not all who haul, haul huge!
