Do some of you only check MPG going down hill.

Using my scanguage II I find it entertaining to try and get the max MPG while driving. What I have found is if you use cruise control on anything but flat grade, you will get much less MPG. Anytime you hear the transmittion shift to a lower gear your MPG goes from 9-10 to 1.5-2.5.

I have some of those features on our 2002 Blazer and does drop MPG like crazy. In fact I ran in 3rd (D before OD was invented ) for most of a tank and the MPG was about the same even in it.

On our 1992 P30 chassis I have yet to even located the OBD-1 connector so if I downgrade my Xray scanner it could at least get computer reading of temps, etc.

In west KY we have free areas you can call flat anyway. I found with the 454 if left in OD (same as D markings in newer stuff) the MPH drops off and then shifts down and the cruise control pulls the pedal to the metal for the rest of the hill. If I just leave it in D (3rd for newer transmission shifter labels) that I do not loss as much ground speed nor does the pedal get sucked to the floor as often so I get over the hill with less stress on the drive train, less fuel but at a faster ground speed. At 55 in rolling hills I leave it out of OD most of the time now. RPM's run about 2500.

Also the TC stays locked more of the time. That saves about 300 RPM's when it is locked for the same ground speed.

WOW!! what a MPG range. I have a 34 foot 96 Winnebago Adventurer and I got 8.51 MPG the last time I checked it. I was towing a Saturn Vue (SUV). We have really enjoyed it. I would like a bigger newer looking one with a bath and half with full slides but with the economy as it is I am pretty satisfied. I have kept it clean and maintained. I don't know a thing wrong with it only it is old.
Oh, I have just installed a hydro-generator. I think my MPH will inclease some. I installed one on my 03 Silverado and the MPG improved 2.61 and I haven't finished tweaking it.

We have a 1999 32' Fleetwood Southwind with the ford V10 that seems just right for us. It has one slide, but is comfortable even without the slide out. We bought it used a couple of years ago after having a 24' Class C for some time. We get about the same gas mileage (9-11 mpg) as the Class C did, but now have a lot more room.

We usually tow a Subaru Forester. We wouldn't want anything bigger as we feel that would prevent us from staying at some pretty cool places where the campsites are on the smallish side. I sometimes miss the more compact size of the Class C, but for extended trips the Class A is really nice to have.

I have owned two 22' class A's (75 Journey, 85 Winne) and now own a 32' (99 Itasca). Length does not really matter much with respect to gas mileage. You push the wind about the same regardless of length. I get about 7.5 MPG overall. I normally run an indicated 67-68 MPH (provides a true 65 MPH). This mileage is over about 12,000 miles that I ran last year towing a 99 Honda CRV all the way. I have the Chevy 7.4 liter with a Banks Powerpack. The Powerpack was to replace the leaking exhaust manifolds. I listened to them squeal at me for about a year before I put the Banks on. The Banks system does not really increase mileage but the engine does run a bit cooler and a get a little bit more power..less shifting going up hill.

My brother drives a 94 Dolphin 35' on a Ford (460 I think). His mileage is a bit lower than mine (6.5-7) but he does seem to have a bit more power sometimes. He does not have the Banks. In general, it is my experience for what its worth that both Ford and Chevy make good engines with the Chevy generally doing a little bit better (not substantial at all) in mileage and it generally runs a bit quieter (I don't know why).

If I were in your spot looking used I would look for the GM 8.1 liter with at least a 5 speed tranny. Mine is a 4 speed.

We have a 34' HR with the workhorse chassis and run around 8.5 mpg average most of the time. We run around 58 mph and tow either a CR-V or a Ranger with the Harley in the bed.

Myself, I don't have any slides and I am glad I don't have that extra problem that comes with them. As for size, I enjoy the extra room. I have had both GM and Ford chassis, and the ride and handling (especially around 18 wheeler's)is much better with the Ford. JMHO. As for mileage, I'm in no hurry, and I drive 55/58 mph, and get around 8.0 mpg. The market is wide open now. Good luck.
