Ok, I looking for some feedback here. We currently own a 2006 Expedition. We tow a 6200 lbs 29' Cougar XLite.

We often go up to the moutains. The drive up from Phoenix is pretty hard with a couple of really long 6% and one 7% that will test the fortitude of most vehicals with a heavy load.

The Expy does pretty good, but with 8 or so trips a year and the fact that the Expy is our main family car, we are concerned that she is going to age prematuraly.

So we are looking for a 250/2500 deisel to do the job. There are lots of used ones on the market.

We love Fords and the 250 is no different; however, my neighbor has already had his 6.0l PSD replaced (30,000 miles). I've heard people say that the 6.0l PSD is not nearly as good as the 7.3l in 2002s and older.

I've also heard many say that the new Duramax with the Allison trany is the best on the market right now (2003 or newer).

We need a truck that is a Crew Cab (that excludes Dodge except for the newer ones -- also MegaCab is low in availabilit) and it must have split bench seats.

So here is what we want.

250/2500 4x4 Deisel Long-bed Crew Cab.

Not looking for back and forth arguments, just some honest feedback on these two vehicals.

We have an 08 F-250 4x4 Crewcab PSD with the regular bed and love it. If you go with an earlier model you will definately get better mpgs due to the new emmission standards.

Being a former Expy owner I can assure you that you will be happy with either one. Both (new Fords) and the Duramax/Allison are rock solid. Moving from an Expedition as a tow vehicle to a diesel is an eye opening experience.

Both trucks are great for towing. Biggest difference I can think of is more cab room in the Ford crewcabs, the Chevy/GMC sits lower than the Ford in 4wd versions. I suggest you take some time and drive both before you buy. I think the Chevy/GMC trucks will ride a bit softer due to the independent front suspension.

Ford did have a lot of problems with the early 6.0's. However GM has had its share or problems too. LB7 variants have a history of injector cable failures, LLY's have a history of overheating. Depending on your budget and preferences, the last of the 6.0 Fords and the last of the LB7's are pretty good motors Personally if I was shopping and it was my money, I would get a Dodge Mega Cab and never look back again. The 5.9L Cummins had very early problems and the 06/early 07 5.9L was such a sweat heart of a motor. Quiet, better fuel economy that the others and a 350,000 to 500,000 mile interval between rebuilds it is sort of a no brainer in my book.

Stay away from Ford's 6.0. The new 6.4 is not a proven motor yet. Early results are good though. The duramax/allison is the best combination on the road today in that class. A proven combination that out performs all others.

WHAT! Dodge don't have a recent model year crew cab?

I guess my '03 Dodge 2500 2wd, auto with CREW CAB isn't really that old

Do some research before you decide, Dodge makes a heck of a good 2500 / 3500 series truck. I'm actually impressed with my brothers Chevy 2500 w/ Dmax - nice truck!

Would I ever buy another Ford???? Maybe, just didn't like the prices and styling this time around.

Though my Dmax/Ally is not new I wouldn't have any other brand. As my sig states it is an '02 model K2500HD and has been flawless so far. Good mileage when towing our 5'er, it is fun to drive every time I get behind the wheel. I don't know what the new ones are like and don't really care since I find them way over priced anyways. I will hazzard a guess and say my older version gets better fuel mileage as well. Good luck with your decision.........................

if you do end up with a ford, the only one to get would be a 99 to early 03 with the 7.3 IMHO. the 6.0 just had way too many problems to take a chance on a used one, and the 6.4 is just too new and does not get as good of mileage. the older 7.3 can easily be tuned to get as much or more torque/hp output as the newer dmax and cummins, without the price tag.
