We are new to Ontario (from BC and Alberta) We spend 5+ months in Mexico.
I am looking for a vehicle insurance company that allows me to suspend coverage (as they did in Alberta) or reimburses (as they did in BC).

I know my Insurance Company (Wayfarer) won't do that. We had the same deal while in BC. PM me if you find someone who does.

I've asked and the answer was that the cost for 6 months will be the same as the cost for 12 so no opportunity to save. I have three or four vehicles that only get driven in the summer.

Don't "suspend" cancel the policy in the fall and get a refund. Take out a new policy when you return.
If you need insurance to return home use a virtual broker like Presidents Choice. You can apply online, pay by credit card and print a pink slip.... then your good to go.

Manitoba and BC do not suspend your insurance. They give you a refund based on the time you were in Mexico. This is a much better way of handling the rebate. Some Mexican carriers require you to have liabilty coverage in the US or Canada. tropacal: I do not understand your statement. While in Mexico it does not matter whether you hit a Mexican or an American. Foreign liability coverage does nor apply in Mexico.

The word that I Got was that in order to qualify for Mexican Insurance, You First must have Insurance at Your Home address! My own experience is from BC where You receive a Credit or adjustment to the Existing Insurance Policy from ICBC and The Private Insurance carrier that we also Use cuts Us a Cheque to cover the Time we are away!

We suspended our vehicle coverage on our car the first year we went to Mexico. The car was not financed so no lein against it. Second year we had a new Honda that was financed so I did not suspend coverage as I figured I'd get some questions from Honda finance. Car was insured with Aviva through OTIP. Our motorhome is insured with Wayfarer and they do not allow taking coverage off - either full year or nothing. Make sure you get coverage back on before you hit US border.

I've been busy checking things out and have learned:
In Ontario:
One company won't even insure you if you at all are going into Mexico.
Some companies will suspend for time SOB and some won't.
One company will even give rebates for time out of NOB but for only 90%.
I understand that if you cancel and re-apply you will need up-to-date copies of claims and driving history, which could get difficult if you are sitting in a internet cafe in Mexico.
So suspend and renew seems better.
I have a whole list of companies and their particulars so pm me if you want details.

I don't know of any Canadian Auto insurer who will honour a claim for anything that happens outside of Canada or the USA.
Up to date claims and driving history were available to my insurer on line. They read it all out to me over the phone and asked if I concured.
Now it's supposed to all be done online.
For instance I applied for a HSBC credit card. They even had my social insurance number, my address for the last 20 years etc. So much for privacy. So much for the governments assurance your SIN number is private.
