Hey guys, you probably like me enjoy reading truck shootouts. although everyone's opinions vary and the winner of the test may not be your first choice. but non-the-less its cool to see the facts, horsepower, torque, acceleration and all that. pickuptruck.com even test diesel vs gas, which was great!
I would like to see a comparison of todays trucks, diesels, and gas engines vs yesterdays. how would a 2003 7.3 stack up against todays 6.4 powerstroke. or how would the 12v cummins do against the 6.7. and the 6.5 vs the current duramax. Also how the trucks handle the load. Even how the old 460 would stack up against the current 3v v10.
If anyone knows of test similar to these that would be great! if not, how cool would that be?

The new technology would win every time.

But it is interesting to contemplate the fact that today we need the fastest with the mostest. When in reality the old technology got it done when it was all we had.

In the early 90s 454s, and 460s ruled, now you can't tow a pop-up with out going diesel. Virtually no one wanted a diesel in 1990.

Thats like asking who would win? The 72' Dolphins or the 07' Pats. The old Dolphins were good but Tom Brady and the Pats(or any modern day team) would destroy the 72' Dolphins.

As the Engineer said, new tech would win every time.

oh yeah, I know that the new technology would win hands down. but I would like to see how much better the new trucks would do. I would like to see how much of a difference. My dad has a 2000 ford f-350 7.3 6 speed manual. To us it hauls our trailer like nothing. But the new trucks have almost double the horsepower. I just think it would be an interesting comparison.

How about hook 'em all to the same 10k trailer; give them $500 for fuel; and see who goes the most distance driving the speed limit?

That's a shoot out I would like to see.
Any and all will get the job done. When we can go FT I want the most miles per dollar.

It would be quite interesting to see how much of an advantage a new diesel would have over 7.3 PSD, 12 valve Cummins, 6.5 liter GM, 8.1 liter gas GM.

I wouldn't want to see tug of wars....no, real tests with real criteria, like towing ability with different weights, acceleration, etc.

I'd also like to see braking distances with same trailers, handling with trailer and same hitches. As much real world as possible.

Mileage differences between old and new, while towing/solo, would be interesting, especially now. In fact we might be able to determine if the additional acceleration and performance is a worthwhile trade-off for (possible) decreased mileage.

Sure it would be apples to oranges because of the greatly increased power and the newer 'more speed' gearboxes, but how much of a difference do all these new fangled devices really make, in day to day driving and towing?

To use that old saying....Bring it on !!

I would also like to see a comparison of old vs new. How about a 96' Explorer 5.0 (215hp V8) vs a Chevy Trailblazer (275hp V6) and see how they pull 4000lbs up a 6% grade. How about a Ford 460 (225hp V8) vs a Chevy 1500 5.3 (300hp V8) tow 7000lbs up a 6% grade. I wonder if todays high horsepower engines match yesterdays low RPM hp and torque machines.

I live in the Southern California mountains. My old 93 Ford Ranger (160hp) is a lot more fun to drive than my wifes Honda Pilot (240hp). Towing would definitely go to the Pilot, but I love torque.

I'm not a real old guy (42), but I've owned a few trucks in my day. My current truck (Chevy 6.0 gas) pulls much like my '94 fuel injected Ford 460, although that truck was a manual transmission and a lot more fun to drive! I also had a '78 with a lightly modified 460, and I beleive my new 6.0 would have whipped it hands down both in towing and fuel economy. Comparing my 6.0 to the truck my dad used to have ('86 F250 with the 5.8 "high output" V8), the new truck absolutely kicks the tar out of the old iron. It pulls trailers up hills faster than the old truck would run solo, and it gets the same or better mileage towing than the old truck did solo.

Yep , the new techonolgy would win .....old ones not even close....and with the new ones the D/A is the winner for acceleration/hp/tq..

As I was opening this thread, that was my thought on the "shootout".
