We are travelling to the U.S. for labour day weekend and was wondering does anyone know what we are permitted or not permitted to bring across perticularly foods. This is our first camping trip south of the border and don't want any problems . thx

From what I have heard, people have trouble bringing over fruits, vegetables, and meats. I'm not sure why but I hear the Customs people can get pretty nasty about it.

There is no labour day in the USA. It's Labor Day... 
And, amazing as it may seem, there are large grocery stores in the USA. You can buy beer and wine there in most states, no special stores (other than PA). But US Customs expects you to bring a couple of cases of beer! Otherwise they'll put you on the suspect list.

No meats, fruits or vegetables. This includes pet food and processed meats. We just buy our food in the US. You can bring condiments and bread and other baked goods. But since your already going shopping I always just get everything I need across the border. You wilbe mazed at the selection and the prices of some products such as meat.

I know several Canadians that do their regular grocery shopping over here (Michigan). Some of them are semi drivers and fill their big diesel tanks too. We just did a Canadian camping trip last month and did our shopping in Sarnia, Ontario - Oh my the prices were high compared. Check the Canada/Alaska forum as this topic comes up every other day in there. You'll get different answers from everyone - at one time I was told that beef, dairy, fruits, and vegetables were a no no which doesn't leave all that much. Pet food is also tricky.

It is always best to check the US customs web site. Things change day to day depending on the possible alerts that are issued. We buy 99% of everything in the US because you will save big dollars on just about everything. As far as food items go they will allow anything that is marked as imported from the US along as it is in the orginal package. Check the web site for all other items

To Jplunket I went to the list and saw Dog & Cat Fur and I thought god you got to be kidding how can I get the fur the dogs leave on the seats of the car out of the car no amount of vacuuming would ever get all the fur out of the car or the trailer. Then I actually read what they meant and who in their right mind would skin a dog or a cat and sell their fur. Yuk. Anyway when I first saw it it gave me a laugh thinking about how you get all of your animals fur out of your vehicle.

As one poster said, it varies frequently. On our first trip this summer, poultry products and eggs were not allowed, but beef was. Last year beef was not allowed. Second trip, US customs said eggs were OK. Most fruit is not allowed. If you don't want to call US customs to check, buy the groceries after you cross the border. Many things are cheaper in the US anyway, although bread and cereals seem to be more costly.
