Yeah, OP referred to it as a 'controlled substance' and apparently not everyone has a clue that controlled substances are tightly regulated and include morphine, heroin, cocaine and their derivatives. We may have a porous border as far as immigration is concerned and a relatively porous border for the drug cartels but I suspect that the border will be a little tighter for a regular citizen trying to sneak in a supply of non prescribed narcotics into the US. We even find some US pharmacists that look at us travelers as criminals when we present a prescription for to get a Sch II filled. But when they call the prescriber, as required by law to substantiate the Rx, they've always filled it.

DW and I take a long list of drugs including pain killers and antibiotics and others. Our primary care Dr. in Maryland writes enough for 3 months and 2 refills. Sometimes CareMark who handles for BC/BS gives us a problem but we work it out. Use Walmart around the country, CVS and Walgreen. A few times we have had to have Dr. call pharmacy.

You cannot get those pain meds in Mexico. They either do not exist or you need a special DR. to get them. Very expensive.

My hubby and I have done a bit of traveling for the past few years. We have a very understanding doctor in California. Our RXs are all written for a three month's supply with refills. We use Caremark and they are delivered as we need them. We have had no problems getting whatever we have needed, including pain medications when they were needed. I still take a narcotic and have no problem getting it from/through my doc. Use a mail order pharmacy/vis your insurance and it is cheaper and easier than waiting in lines at drug stores. Also that way your own doctor knows what you are taking.
Always as a backup keep a list of your drugs, with doseages and frequency of taking handy for emergencies.
Hope this helps.

I ask the Border Patrol this very question at the crossing at Progresso MX. I was told if I had a prescription from both sides of the Border I would be allowed a 30 day supply, A passport and register at the crossing US side. That was to keep me from doing the samething tomorrow, That has been 3 year ago. I know it has been tightened since then.
