I understand the investment CBS made to secure broadcast rights to the Olympics. In order to maximize their return on investment the focus is to present an entertainment show in order to attract the largest audience of non sports enthusiasts as possible to watch the commercials. The show is presented to us in prime time using a “Live on tape” format allowing them to string out the viewing audience who may have an interest in a particular event as long as possible. All this after we already know the outcome of the event and only want to finally see it 12 hours later. Commercial free over the air/cable TV is not free since we spend our time waiting for the network to decide to show the event and by not giving us the courtesy of posting the exact time the events will be shown so we can pick and choose. The web may give us information in almost real time but is a poor substitute to the enjoyment of seeing the event on a big screen.
With the technology available I would pay for the ability to be my own director and have access to the live network feed for every event covered. We now have enough hard disk space for hundreds of hours of programs so give me the time and settings so my recorder can save the preliminary heats of dressage or early rounds of Greco Roman wrestling. Then I can watch the event I want when I want and not on their schedule. Maybe someday.

This is why I said to DW that I didn't like it when the Olympics are held on the other side of the planet. Unfortunately here on the west coast you have to stay up pretty late to see some events. For the last two weeks I have intentionally quit watching local or national sports TV or reading the sports section in the paper so I can still enjoy watching the events.
DW suggested that it would be great if the network offered an Olympic sports package where you could select only the events you are interested in watching. Great idea but something tells me the networks would eventually try and make the entire Olympics a "pay per view event".
That would bite!
