My wife is a competent, smart, professional woman who is a good driver. Still, she refuses to try driving our MH, saying it is "just too big for her". I'd really like her to learn if only for emergencies such as if I stroke out or break both arms, etc.
Suggestions? TIA

Take her out to a LONG STRAIGHT road.....pull to a stop (making sure no other cars or vehicles are around) and get up and tell her to hop into the driver's seat. Welllll, that's what DH did to me! It worked! LOL Now I wonder why I was so scared!

Had the same problem. Wife finally agreed to try driving it on a remote area of the interstate. Once she had 50 miles under her belt, both she and I felt comfortable, knowing that she could drive it if she had to. So my suggestion is to take her to a remote area (or an empty parking lot to begin with) and let her drive without fear of other vehicles.

I stongly encourage her to learn to drive and to drive when yo ar eon a trip. Last year i came down with bells Palsy while we were on a trip, thankfully my wife had started driving during the first part of our trip. She had to drive the last six hundred miles, and did a wonderful job (she is 65) We stated out in a shopping center parking lot early in the am and then she drove on some rural interstate rds until she became comfortable. there are driving shools. Encouragement helps.

Take to make her comfortable, find a big quiet parking lot.

My wife is in a wheelchair so her driving is out of the question unless we add hand controls. But two of my three children have driven it. My youngest son (4th year Journeyman mechanic) and my only daughter. Neither has any hesitation in driving it, in fact I let our daughter drive it for me when we get to Calgary (where she lives and knows all the shortcuts). Our son has taken it for a couple weekends with friends and are planning for next years Craven Festival, him and all the kids that he went to school with almost 10 years ago. When we found the MH and test drove it my daughter drove it also. First time or two was in a big parking lot so nothing to hit but has to be in her comfort zone or you are fighting a loosing battle, wives always get their way in the end no matter what you want....

We bought our 40 DP in July of 06, i drove it the first 250 miles, next day, wife drove it on (I20) for 300 Miles. Very easy for her to drive now i have to fight her away from driving it. by the way in an emergency it is good my wife can drive it.

Some husbands are just NOT good teachers, they get frustrated quickly, they raise their voices, they give poor instructions, they don't explain things well AND they deny all of the above.

Be smart, save a marriage, make her a better driver, HIRE A TEACHER. It's cheaper.

We had what seemed like a medical problem while in Quartzsite and I decided I needed to get to our medical facility. My wift took the controls and drove most of the 1100 miles. She still won't back it up into a camp site but on the road she is great. We got the medical problem taken care of.

Perhaps depends on the wife. My wife will drive anything with wheels. Though older, our rig is a one-hander. She drives about as much as I do. HOWEVER, when it comes to getting off the highway, maneuvering around cities and parking lots, etc. She's not so thrilled.

There are RV driving schools available that especially teach women and men. Dick Reed comes to mind.
