DW drove our 28 ft class C from Vegas to Minneapolis by herself ( I think the biggest car she ever drove was a Chevy Cavalier) and was quite comfortable with it. However, she is terrified of our 37 ft class A. She had stated that she wanted to try it so while traveling on 287 in Texas complete with toad I pulled over to the side of the road and she asked me what I was doing, I said it's your turn. She turned pale, but got behind the wheel and checked and adjusted everything and off we went. Maxed out at about 50 MPH and tended to hug the side of the road. Had a few trucks pass us and that terrified her, but she basically did fine until the raindrops started to fall and she was done for the day. Probably got about 30 minutes of windshield time and did pretty good. I am sure she will refuse to drive in city or congested traffic for quite some time but I am confident that in case of emergency or other circumstances she could handle it. I love to drive and I do not push her to get behind the wheel, and put undue pressure on her, and possibly endanger us or other people. I will let her progress at her own pace and I am sure she will become more and more confident in her ability to handle the A.

Reminds me of yesterday I was talking to a fellow RV.Netter, who shall remain nameless, at least by me, who let his wife drive his new motor home around the parking lot of an industrial park. on one corner, his awning scraped up against the building, and he took over driving again.

The awning should have been retracted before driven

My wife absolutely will not drive our coach. I have not pressed it. If I get disabled, she is smart enough to get someone to get the coach moved to a safe location. If I am flat out no longer able to drive the coach anymore. then we are done with RVing. Jim.

I "assumed" (yes bad word) that the awning was retracted and it was the metal cover over it that scraped the building.

I also would love to have my wife take over and drive. If nothing else to just give me a break. She's a little intimidated by the drivers test so I don't think she'll do it.

Just because a person can steer a MH on I-10 between rest stops at high noon does not make them qualified to be a "driver". Some people shouldn't drive, they don't have and will never have the right decision making, depth perception, reactionary response to handling a large, overweight and long vehicle in traffic.

We teach the poor woman to drive in the parking lot, we give her a Grade "A" and then she never drives again until we have a "Crisis" at which time we yell at her to now drive us home! This "home schooled" person who has had no practice time since her 1st passing grade cannot be expected to be the skilled driver we want on the road. IMHO.

My wife would not try to drive our 5er (one reason we moved up to a class A) but she dorve our 32ft class A during the test drive before I did, I think she is even better at it, but we are both new to MH's, she used to drive a 40 Pax school bus

Just a note - except for very brief trips on the Interstate, her trainer of course, knew immediately she was pretty comfortable on the Interstate. So MOST of her driver training was directly thru the center, then around the center, then all around the city of Lebanon, TN - everyone survived... She said he was a VERY mean person! (not really though) Now she says she is SURE she can drive in a city if need be. (I can't wait 'till we cross the GW bridge again)

Honestly, some of you guys blow me away. The number of ways in which you seem to talk down about (and to???) your wives positively astounds me. I have a 36' Class A, started with a 29' C, and have been the only driver (or passenger, for that matter).

Frankly, I wouldn't get behind the wheel with some of you fellows at shotgun. Condescension is soul-sucking.
