We plan to go to Gatlinburg in October. Anyone have a good guess at which week might be best to catch the fall leaf colors?

Since we plan to go to Nashville in mid-October, I bought a tourist book.

It says: "Beginning on Sept. 15, you may call 800-697-4200 to hear updates on the TN Fall Leaves across the state."

Hope this helps.

You will want to book ASAP if you want a spot in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge in Oct. It is a very busy time in the smokies.

Most sources will say the 3rd week of Oct but over the past several years it's been the 4th week

If we don't get some much needed rain soon there may not be a fall leaf season. Here in middle TN some of the leaves are already turning a drab yellow and falling off the trees. Otherwise mid Oct. seems to be the usual time for this beautiful event.

Fall leaf color Depending on the amount of rain that ocours over the next few weeks, The peak is generally the 3rd week, with the low lands hanging on till the end of the month. While in the area, still early in the season, don't forget to drive the Cherohala Skyway. It's one of the most beauitful drives just out side of the Park.

Here in the west end of KY we are seeing the same thing and do not expect strong colors this year. Taking the dog for a run this AM i saw a lot of oak leaves already on the ground but oaks are the the color producers anyway like maples, etc. Calling is the best but when booking ahead I would go with the end. Heavy frost is often more near Nov.

Having lived in the mountains of WV,VA and now NC, that question is asked quite often by folks who like to come to these area's to see all the different colored foliage of the trees in the fall, but as stated earlier, depending on rainfall, first frost and temps, it's actually not that easy sometimes to tell when there is a "best time" to see mountains and valley's that look like a bowl of fruit loops,(my description). Check on this board through the early fall, call the Chamber of Commerce in the area that you might be interested in visiting, and that might be the best way to find out. It is a bit of a guessing game, well worth the effort to be a partaker in if your timing is right. That being said, it can be hard to nail down a set time as to when the "peak period" or "best time" to see all the fall colors...just too many variables.

We have been having leaves falling like rain this week. If we don't get some much needed rain, we won't be having a pretty Fall. Usually, the 3rd week of October is the best for colors in TN.
