DH and I have made reservations to go to a near by State Park for Thanksgiving this year. We have always done the big meal at home, but this year I just want to do something different. I intend to have a good meal at the campground, and am excited about planning and decorating. Our 2 grown daughters live with us and though they are not happy with the change, have agreed to help do some of the cooking at home and come up for dinner. For the 32 years DH and I have been married, this will the first time we have not eaten either at our house or the in laws, who have been gone now for 3 years. We have never camped past October, so I'm hoping the weather will cooperate!

Kathy,
Believe it or not it will work out and you will have a great time, maybe even start a new family tradition! We camp most Thanksgivings and have for several years now. This one coming up is the first we'll miss in several years, a new great-grand baby due about that time and I'm not going to miss that for anything!
We do a traditional meal, deep fried turkey, electric skillet sweet potatoes, crock-pot mashed potatoes, stove gravy using canned broth, etc. With a little advance prep it's not anymore work than at home and the surroundings a lot different!
Where you are the weather will probably be good, cooler, we have had cold, but that makes it special. We love the fall color, if it hasn't all gone, varies from year to year, hiking, all the things it's too hot to do in the summer.
Go and have a great time!

One of the true joys of living in Georgia is the long camping season. We have 1 grown son who still lives at home, and 2 teens. I usually cook at home if we are hosting company. This year we have already decided to go visit family in Florida. So the weekend prior to Thanksgiving we're heading south to Stephen C Foster SP(Okefenokee swamp) for a few days of family time, then over to Rocky Bayou SP(Florida) to visit the in-laws. DS22 will have to fend for himself this year--he works in retail, so you know he won't be camping that week! I'll bake him a pie and leave him with some turkey & dressing, though.

You will love camping at Thanksgiving and if the grown children don't like it then let them cook their own, don't mean no disrespect but Healthy Choice makes a great turkey dinner. Thanksgiving just isn't like it used to be many, many years ago when the women stayed in the kitchen and cooked for hours while the men folk sat around watching football. LOL! Go for the new tradition!

Last year was the first time, for us, being away from the family at Thanksgiving. They did just fine. My dd said her dressing had no taste, but she did it on her own. My ds and his wife ate out.
Have fun!

Change can be good. This year for the first time we will be camping over the Christmas holidays - December 20th through January 1. We've started calling this our 'Trailer Trash' Christmas. And it is likely to become one of our new traditions.
safe travels,

Spent Thanksgiving week in Yosemite (UpperPinesCG) a few years ago almost only ones there -- except for one old scrawny coyote. It was wonderful. Fairly cool and a little drizzle. Didn't even cook -- nice turkey dinner at lodge. Sure was a week of being thankful. Have fun.

We did that several years ago with BIL, his wife and his mother. It was such a memorable weekend. We took a smoker. BIL & I got up early, put the turkey on in the smoker and went back to bed. One of the best weekends, we have ever spent. I would suggest do some of the cooking at the campsite, get everyone involved and most of all enjoy the company of those with you. I think if you do ALL the cooking at home, you might as well stay there.
Y'all have fun now!!

We went to Nashville last year for Thanksgiving(KOA). The campground hosted a Potluck for everyone camping. They provided the meat and gravy, rolls, drinks and paper products and everyone else brought sides and desserts. It was fabulous. We were with our usual group, but it was nice to meet more people and we had such a great time, we are going back this year! We've tried to talk our friends with grown children to join us, but they are insistent on the usual traditional family dinner. Now, we are trying to get them to drive up on Friday and do the weekend with us.
