We're leaving our summer 'job' in Minnesota, heading thru Michigan for a quick stop to visit family and friends, then planning to pick up I-77 south in Ohio and take it all the way down to I-85 westbound to Anderson, SC. and finally Royston, GA area. We've never pulled the 5'er this route, and wondering how bad the Mtns are... passes, tunnels, etc. Should we avoid this road? Just don't want to take I-75 into Atlanta. Any advise, will be appreciated... Thanks !

For me it's typical interstate mountains, very very pretty and interesting. I go along at 55 mph in 3rd gear on the steepest bits, but with the Hemi and 16K total I feel fine, not overly bogged down, But I'm not usually in a hurry. I get great gas mileage on the run into NC, that's for sure!

I would much rather take 77 over 75 or 95. Hilly but not that curvy. The semis roll 75-80 down thru Fancy Gap. Good road surface, too. Mostly.

We have used I-77 from Cleveland area to NC on our way to Raleigh, NC to visit our daughter since buying the TT in 2001. We've modified the route some to get from Western NY to NC, but generally the route is flat in OH and becomes hilly in WV, south of Charleston on the turnpike. We have occasionally taken it all the way to Columbia, on our way to Florida. It is level again when you leave WV for the duration.
Hope this helps.

I drive it on a regular basis. Good road, very beautiful countryside. After Fancy Gap, the view going down the grade to Mt. Airy, NC is spectacular on a clear day, especially in the fall.
77 in WV is toll, about $3-4 at each of the two plazas.
Remember, it is an interstate and is fairly lightly traveled and in pretty good shape compared to many. A far better journey than on I-95.

Usually good fuel prices in VA and SC. Charlotte is usually a mess in the am and pm rush.

We drive I-77 all the time to Charlotte, NC, (family) and often into SC when going to Disney World. It is no problem. Better, IMO, than I-71 and I-75.

Hi,
Just drove the I77 route down through WV,VA into NC round trip last week and all is good... No construction delays. You will need $3-4 dollars at each of 3 toll booths in WV. As has been said, the view off to your left going from Fancy Gap to Mt. Airy is really spectacular on a clear day. Some of the hills in WV from Charleston to the NC line will slow you down a bit (my wife's 98 CRV slows down...my Infiniti G35 does not notice the hills and my MH pulling the CRV does slow down a fair amount on some of the hills) but nothing that is not easily handled.

We take that route 3 or 4 times a year from Greenwood SC to Rittman OH, just did it last month. As others have said, no construction just now, tolls in W.Va., and two tunnels, both are wide and easy to get through. You won't need jake brakes or extra braking anywhere on the trip, and Charlotte is the worst part, it can be no problem, or it can be a mess.

For those reading this post but starting off farther east than the original poster, consider US route 19 (exit 57 of I-79) thru Summersville (watch speed; 50 mph means 50 mph) all the way to Beckley. However, for those coming from Ohio, Michigan, etc., when you're on I-77, you might as well stay on it thru Charleston, WV.
