Too late now, the decision is made and it's a done deal. It's college Spanish.

Do you speak Spanish?
When I assist my son in driving, I give him warnings in Polish
Fact is that I am TRYING to speak as little as possible.

No, I took Spanish in college in the 6-week summer session. I only remember about as much as you can learn on Sesame Street. I remember much more of the French I took in high school. She, however, has taken Spanish throughout middle and high school, and aced the Spanish Regents. So taking the college course as a senior is really the natural thing to do. A couple notes here: driver ed is hard to get into in school, and she is scheduled for second semester - after she has her license; and, with Spanish, she'll graduate high school with 33 college credits, none of which cost us a penny and all from SUNY.
As for the driving instruction, I have gotten much better at not speaking about driving, too. Of course she has gotten much better since we first went out, too. I suppose I could try French, but it would take me a bit to work it out.

Is she going to take the 6 hour course like you did or skip driver ed entirely?

She has already taken the required 5 hour course she has to take before she can take the exam for her license (there was also an exam to get her permit). After she is licensed she will take the 6 hour course. From what I gathered from her experience in the 5 hour course, they are quite similar - an overview of the basic rules of the road and what to do when you get in trouble (flat, crash, etc.). The 6-hour course has top be repeated every 3 years to keep your discount.

Moose, my 16 year old just finished drivers ed this summer but has not yet rec'd her certificate which is what the insurance company need for proof before they will apply (any) credits. What that is I can't say. However I can tell you that when my 23 year old got out of college and got a job and got her own car insurance, I called to remove her from the policy and guess what ? My rates actually went up as the ins. company reassessed our cars. I was incredulous that I removed an underage driver from our policy and the rates actually went up !!! We shopped around but the new higher rate was still cheaper. Of course I can't prove it, but the whole car insurance scam is rigged. If your paying a certain amount, that rate is not going to drop as the companies will find some lame excuse to maintain your level of payment or up it.

I agree with you Minnow. I read in the paper recently that NY has 73 different insurance zones. Can it really be that different? I live in a very rural area, but I bet we're connected to a small city 30 miles away when it comes to theft and accident data just to make our rates higher. Cases like yours amaze me, and as I said earlier, I still can't believe they offer no discount for a kid who goes through an actual course in driver ed, just like the kid who has his parent sign the form that he completed 20 hours behind the wheel. There is no comparison in my mind - the kid that had classroom and car instruction by a certified instructor is likley going to have a leg up on one who didn't. We shop every 6 months to make sure we're getting the best rates we can - and neither of us have had a ticket or crash in over 15 years.

Minnow and Moose... I couldn't agree more. My wife and I took the defensive driving course to get our 10% discount(each BTW) when it came time to renew...guess what...our rates went up roughly 12%...when we questioned it, we were told it was a general rate increase passed along to all clients. (yeah right). I'm in my late 30's and I distictly remember my parents telling me that as I get older my insurance will go down...it hasn't yet. neither of us has had a ticket in 10+ years or an accident. In June we had a very bad hail storm and my 04 Pacifica has some pretty good damage($3400)We got the check minus the deductible and I pretty much guanantee when we renew the policy it will go up again. It's all a crock! I can see why people will take their chances on the road with our insurance.
