Hello everyone. This is our first post on the forum. Looking forward to getting to know the folks here.

Husband and I are planning to head to south Texas for 3 weeks or so this coming January and he is really interested in finding campgrounds that are home to bluegrass pickers and lots of jamming. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I cant give you names as such..but I can tell you that there are numerous parks with several folks that sure like to play the guitars, fiddles etc..most will have their own jam sessions.. and they will travel to other parks and join in without hesitation or even invitation.....

Bit of Heaven in Donna, TX has a resident blue grass group that plays regularly in this park and others.

AZE mosey over to escapees.com, do a search for "bluegrass in Texas" and you should find several threads of people who workamp in S Texas by picking. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Good topic and I hope people post some specific information. One reason I missed Florida the last two winters was that I could not find comparable Bluegrass Festivals in the Rio Grande Valley.

There is a festival in Mercedes during mid February and it is primarily country but generally have a bluegrass tent set up. Most of the bluegrassers are in the Mission area and there are some very fine ones. I believe the "Chicken Opry" has as much or more bluegrass as country and that is in the Mission area. They have a website. On Saturday afternoons during the winter bluegrassers gather at the city park in Alamo and do their thing. If the weather is bad they sometimes go into one of the city buildings a block or so away from the park. Typical jams if there are lots of people, several will break away from the main group and jam.

I might add to the above post that all or nearly all of the jams are amplified and bluegrassers normally shun amps. Texas is not really bluegrass country but there are enough "knee knockers" around that are great musicians.
