Our cat is eating like a pig. Not sure what to think. Now here is what makes us wonder what’s going on. She is a 16 year old domestic short hair found on the highway when she was a kitten. About a week before the Melamine & Wheat Gluten food recall we took her to the Vet because she had been losing weight. Down to 7 lbs. from 9 lbs. Found she had a kidney infection and was treated for it. Then we learned that we had been feeding her one of the recalled foods.

Over the next couple months she continued to lose weight and leveled out at about 4 lbs. she is extremely skinny and eats very little. She has been stable though and like that for the last year or so.

Over the last year we have tried several different cat foods to get her to eat more with no luck. Her diet has been her food supplemented with vitamins. Then about 2 weeks ago someone suggested mixing beef baby food with her normal food and to our surprise she liked it.

Now about a week ago she has started to cry for more food she eats every thing we give her and wants more. She will eat anything now; I think she would eat the house if it were tuna flavored. It’s too soon to tell if she is gaining weight. We are puzzled as to what has happened?

Sounds like her thyroid is off. My 15 year old kitty has been on thyroid meds for a few years now.

Take her to the vet and ask for the blood workup on it. This can be regulated fairly well with a pill.

Anytime my kitty starts to eat like a pig and still lose weight, I take her to the vet and we decide if we need to cut back or increase the dosage.

One of our cats was on thyroid medication from about age 15 to age 18.

That cat also had a warm head, and was suddenly crazy about water.

Good luck!

Big three differentials: hyperthyroid, diabetes, chronic kidney disease - all need blood tests to diagnose. Get her in for a complete blood panel and physical exam. Good luck.

Well, it might be the beef, and the time of year, and who knows, sometimes when they get to eating a little more, the appetite comes back. Saw this at the Great Kitty Rescue in Pahrump. But it might be also a physical problem such as Dr Doug mentioned. I'd make an appointment to get her blood run and have the doc take a look at her, and you can weigh her at the same time.

I second that, even though I'm not a vet. Our first cat had hyperthyroid disease - your kitty's symptoms sound like many of his. If her fur looks like she's not cleaning it well (kind of "greasy" looking) then I'd say hyperthyroid is very likely. In any case, no way to know w/o the blood work.

Back in January we had our cat Teddy doing the same thing, he ate like a little piggy and drank a lot too, I took him to the vet for a thyroid test and it was negative, next step was x-rays, the news was devastating for us.
My point being get the vet check up and blood work done asap, it's the only way you'll have a definitive answer.
Good luck and please keep us posted.

We'll keep her in our prayers here-just as an aside, I switched to an organic sourced in Illinois cat food right after the China thing, though my cat's food wasn't included in the recall. It's expensive, but the quality is there-Cat Fancy gave it their highest rating as well. It's called Evanger's and comes in several flavors, dog food also. I might be a bit "enthusuastic" about my 2 cats, they only drink distilled water, my effort to keep their plumbing free. All the above has a happy side effect of a nicer litterbox too!
