We live here in Sahuarita - 20 miles south of Tucson - and plan to go up to Snowflake area in a month or so.

I have never driven Hwy 77 between Tucson and Globe but have driven the Salt River Canyon on Hwy 77 between Globe and Show Low (several years ago with a much small trailer).

This is about a 230 mile trip.

Alternative is go up thru Phoenix, overnight at Camp Verde (which is about half way) and then thru Flag and over and drop down - about 400 miles.

We stay at Distant Drums in Camp Verde a lot as first night or last night out.

Would like some input on Hwy 77 between Tucson and Snowflake and recommendations.

Thanks - enjoy each day - be safe!

Hi Lauren - we have driven from Oracle Junction to Superior - a few years agon when the spring flower show was fantastic but have not done the segment from Winkelman to Globe - over Pinal Pass. To Superior was a pretty and easy drive.

Another alternative to miss the City would be the Florence highway to 60 then east to Globe - or 60 into Mesa and north on Ellsworth to hit the Bush Highway at the river, then NE to the beeline (87) to payson and on 260 to Snow Flake.

We like the "60 into Mesa and north on Ellsworth to hit the Bush Highway at the river, then NE to the beeline (87) to payson and on 260 to Snow Flake."
That is the way we are going to go back east to Memphis.
Drive is easy and scenic.
good luck

Thanks for the info.

Cannot find Florence Hwy - is that the one that runs due north out of Eloy?

We have been up to the Scottsdale / Northeast Phoenix area a bit over the last 2-3 years for Mayo Clinic visits. We found the "new" or south Hwy 202 to swing around the city. Works good. Comes off I-10 down by Beaudry; I think it is Exit 160.

What about I-10 to (south 202) to the 101 to Hwy 60 to Ellsworth (same as Usery?) to Bush Hwy TO Beeline (Hwy 87) to Payson and then Hwy 260 to Showlow and north to Voyager just south of Snowflake.

On paper it looks good but how about a bunch of city traffic?

Thanks.

Sorry = the Florence Highway,#89 - starts out as Oracle in town and 177 branches off that at Oracle Junction toward Winkleman.
Yes the "new" 202, around the east side to either Ellsworth or even Power would work but whenever we go down to Tucson from Mesa we use 89.

Thanks, guys.

Most all of those take me into the Phoenix area which is ok if I have to. I really don't like being "truck driver" thru Phoenix traffic - bad enuf with our little converitible! - unless necessary.

I could take Hwy 77 all the way from Tucson to Show Low but that is the Salt River Canyon and not sure how that would be with a larger rig. That is the key question.

If the Salt River Canyon is that bad I could do the winding around Phoenix to get to Hwys 87 and 260 but a lot of that sounds like city traffic.

Shortest route is Hwy 77 at 230 miles and up to Phoenix and the Payson route is 285 miles.

And I cannot find Hwy on any map or routing software that I have - do you mean Hwy 79?

Thanks.

Lauren, we've taken 77 from Catalina to Globe several times, and I doubt you'll have any problems. It's certainly no worse than either 87 or 260 are via Payson (albeit two lanes instead of four).

I was doing some Scouts related work near Payson last year, and found I-10 to 202 to 101N to 202 (Red Mtn Fwy) to AZ-87 to be a fairly good route. Since I was driving a lot of that late at night or on weekends, I felt more comfortable heading thru PHX than I would during peak hours.

Lauren, Take the 10 to the 202 to the 101 and get off on the north side of 202
take Country Club exit and turn left on Country Club/Rte 87
Stay on 87 to Payson and turn right onto 260 head east to Snowflake
I would not take a big trailer through the Salt River Canyon
