I use it at my winter spot that uses a septic system. I dump every 12 days through a 1" hose with no problem.
Rid X web site FAQ
Q: How soon does RID-X® begin work?
A: The enzymes in RID-X® begin working as soon as they come in contact with water. The bacteria take 2-4 hours to germinate and then begin to break down solid waste. If the temperature and conditions are favorable, then the bacteria will multiply to the maximum level that the environment will allow in about 2-4 days. Since septic systems vary, the speed at which the bacteria and enzymes break down waste varies.

It's a HOLDING tank not a SEPTIC SYSTEM. We have never used ANY tank additives and have never seen the need for anything. No odors, no issues in three RV's, a Class C and 2 Class A's. We boondock for up to two weeks at a time, and have been to Alaska twice, so we don't empty all that often. A lot of folks seem to think the additives (Mouse Milk) are necessary and the promoters of these products do everything they can to push that idea. In my opion, the only result is to lighten your wallet.
Your decision, and also your money.

As an alternative to formaldahyde chemicals, I have been using urea fertilizer which works like Odorloss. 1/4 cup per 40 gallons once a week. When starting out, make sure you flush all other chemicals out. This stuff actually feeds the bacteria, producing odorless nitrogen gas so the tank must be free of anything that kills the bacteria. Start the tank with two gallons of water and 1/4 cup of the fertilizer. During the summer when we use the rig only on weekends and dump every three weeks, I add 1/4 cup urea at the beginning of each weekend. I have found it works like a charm and is environmentally friendly. It costs about 1/10 the price of the RV chemicals. FWIW.
Casey---your so correct, a bacteria is the only way to go, I use rid-x and can go until my tank is full with no smell, sometimes in my newmar dp. it is 7 weeks depending on where I am stuck, and as of now im testing the new 04 crf250s and my toyhauler has 11 weeks on it and no smell, an best of all it costs about $8.50 a year.--the perfume and preserve it method is the worst way to go!!!

Actually, the vast majority of fulltimers that we know do the same as we and do ont put anything in the black tank but to use generous amounts of water with each flush. For a number of years, I did add some Rid-Ex but I really see very little difference with it or without. The natural bacterias that are normally found in the tank as you use it will do pretty much the same thing as as what happens in a septic system, in the early stages. The natural action will make most of what is in the tank a liquid in about 48 hours as long as the temperature stays at 40 degrees or above.
The septic action in a designed system does much more than to just liquefy the solids, but the black tank will do the first part, if allowed to do so. Products like Rid-Ex are really intended for a septic tank, but there are similar products that are designed for your waste tanks. If you have a large group using the RV and have to dump tanks in only a couple of days, an additive might help to speed things up. For most of us, as long as you allow the tank to fill at least half full before you empty it, water is all that you really need.

try having a leak at your black water tank in the middle of a music festival with nowhere to dump the tank till the pumper truck comes around "tomorrow" then you will appreciate them smell better additives, dont ask me how i know, did i mention it was 105 degrees and about a 1 mph wind, after pleeding with the pumper truck and having really understanding neihgbors, got the problem fixed with some fiberglass resin, just bought the motorhome and low and behold the previous owners idea of winterizing wasnt what i had in mind, not to get off track but them deodirizers do help!!!
