This is rather hypothetical, but we need to know this, just in case.
Some neighbors are selling their fifth wheel and we might consider buying it. Because we don't have (nor do we want right now) the big truck necessary to tow it, the seller is offering to tow it to our winter site in AZ for gas money (of course, we would pay him more than just expenses). Question is, assuming we have already made the transaction and hold the title, we would be insuring it, presumably. So, would our insurance cover his trip in our fiver, or would his own insurance cover it?! Thanks!

You'd better check with your insurance agent and then (or quietly ask the tower) if he has insurance. I believe that when you pay for a service he becomes a commercial enterprize.

The auto policy covers the trailer while it is under tow. If you've already completed the sales transaction, the seller no longer has an insurable interest. He would be covered for any liability due to his negligence if an accident occurs while towing, but the trailer itself would not be covered under the seller's auto policy.
My advice, buy a policy for the trailer before it is moved. Once set-up on the site, you need a policy to cover yourself anyway.

The trailer is covered for liability only while it is being towed. There is no collision coverage that transfers from the tow vehicle to the trailer. You have to have a policy on the 5er to have any collision or comprehensive coverage. If you hit something or someone the liability coverage on the tow vehicle will cover the damages to the other property but there will be no coverage to repair the trailer being towed.

It actually happened on this forum a few years ago, when a man and his son bought their first fiver, a used one from a lady who had just lost her husband. Paid $15,000.00 cash for it, and the man had a "friend" tow it to his home for an agreed upon price of $250.00. Less than 1000 yards from his home, the RV wiped out one whole side on a tree. No insurance. $3500.00 damage. So sad!
