About the birds and "early" migrations. I had reported a little while back that I was seeing humming birds at the feeders in record numbers just before our first cool front and was wondering if they were starting an early migration. Well for an update, here in DFW area of Texas I have seen other bird species gathering and moving but the HBs were pretty much down to two..

Well, we got a storm out in the Gulf you may have heard about and today, I got HBs fighting for places around one feeder.. I still contend that they "know" the weather is changing and are stocking up to move south. With the scattered storms in the area I bet you they are gone by the weekend totally..
Just my observations from 20+ years watching them at this particular location.

Is this earlier than usual, or on schedule?

Humming birds left Central Missouri October 7, 2007 we write the date when they get here in the spring and the date they leave for their trip South, they are stocking up at the feeder now for their Southern Journey, you take good care of our feathered friends when they get their next month as we have all summer,,,,,

We still have them here in Minnesota, although not as many as we had earlier in the summer. It's been cooling down quite a bit here. Last week it was 88 on Monday, today it's 63, last night was down to 44. I'm guessing that the hummers won't be around here much longer.

Here's a pic that my spouse one evening last summer. He set the camera up on a tripod under the feeder and was clicking photos with the remote from in the house. Just before dark they all came at once.

Here in north Texas, I have had a couple hummers around my front porch feeder and a couple around my back patio 2 feeders all summer. Yesterday I noticed all the feeders were suddenly almost dry. Refilled them all last evening. This morning there were 5 at the front feeder and 6 at the back ones. Don't recall ever seeing that many at one time before.

I still have plenty of them at our feeder.... even though one thinks it owns it. They can be aggressive, can't they? LOL Our next door neighbor feeds them as well so between our two houses we see a LOT of them. I guess there are more of the little hummers in the pasture and woods out back than I realized until I started feeding them. I refill our feeder at least once a week, we have thirsty buzzers around here!

I know we will need to get them ready for their migration by making sure they have plenty to eat, but I also understand that I shouldn't feed them after it starts getting too cold because they might stick around too long before moving further south. So, when do I stop refilling the feeder?

If you have bears in your area you may want to take down the feeders sooner than later. The bears will be spending 20 hours per day looking for food and the humming bird feeders are like a snack bar to a bear. And they will put a lot of effort into reaching the feeders.

In our area (upstate NY) the males have left, but there are still a bunch of females hitting the feeders, and they really don't like each other!

Geez! I wish I had THAT many around my feeder at one time!

I get three that arrive here (Washington) around early May and usually around the feeder until end of August, but this year they didn't stay long. Last time I seen any of them was around the end of July.

Next year, I'm going to put up more feeders. The one I have now dangles in front of the RV's side window.

I can't seem to attract them. I've tried the plants, feeders, etc. Could just be where I live but my BIL who lives about an hour southwest has themm all the time in the summer.
