Like many of you, my buddy has a map of the US on his fiver and it shows the various states that he has camped in. He's hit pretty much all of the east coast. We were talking about his trip furthest south when he went to various southern states. Thats when he let on that when he was camping in Tennessee that he drove his truck into Arkansas
and that is why he was able to fill in the State. He claims that because he had his camper keys in his pocket that fulfilled all that is necessary to fill in the state. I claim that he needs to remove the decal and wait until he actually camps within the state. Are there any rules/guidelines to when you are supposed to fill in a state on the map? Does just pulling your camper thru the state qualify? Simply visiting the state while your camping or do you actually need to spend a night camping in the state. Thanks for your thoughts.

There are no rules. Everyone does whatever they want. Just decide when you'll claim a state, and stick with your own decision. Can't control what others do, and you shouldn't care. Life's too short.

I vote for having to spend at least one night in a real campground, not a truck or rest stop. Otherwise I'm putting my camper keys in my pocket the next time I fly and can knock off a bunch of states.. haha.

We've have just started this rving thing, but I am only marking states where someone in our family has spent a night in our trailer.

Opinions vary.

Sounds like a personal qualification to me. IMHO, I wouldn't fill it in unless I stayed a night in the state. Other's may have a different opinion or "rule" they use.

His trailer, his rules.

For us it is either camp in the state, or spend an entire day seeing the state, WITH the trailer.

I have heard many different "rules" that different RVers make up. Some just say they have to spend the night, some must play golf, make love, eat a burger (ribs, ice cream, pizza... whatever their obsession is), go to a museum, state park, national park, or visit the state capitol building. Some think if they spend $ in the state (even for fuel) that qualifies as a "visit". To each his/her own.

PS: Notice the big empty void of Missouri in our map? Dang, can't imagine how we missed it, but we did!

The rule is: There are no rules when it comes to the map.

We fill in when we've camped there or spent a significant amount of time while on a camping trip. I've visited a LOT of states on the East Coast - but it wasn't a camping trip but with an 8th grade East Coast Historical trip, and I don't count the Marriott as camping
