Motorcycle riders simply have to 'cross' the border to get a 'photo' of the state line sign...

I guess my thinking is that if the trailer is IN the state at some point you can say you have had the camper IN the state...

Each person should have their OWN guidelines...but changing guidelines mid-stream to suit a new situation...is well...I guess their option since it is their life.

Perhaps when I'm retired (God willing to let me make it there)...I will adopt the sleep in a state guideline...but for now...I'm a working man with limited vacation time...I travel 12-14 hour days when GOING TO and COMING FROM vacations...I stop for breaks along the numerous states we pass thru...we've had our kids IN many many states of this great Country...just because we haven't slept in those states doesn't mean I haven't had my kids IN those states while pulling our TT...I guess MY rules/thoughts differ than others...but you know what...that's what makes this country great!

But as far as having my keys in my pocket when I visit a state...well that's a different animal...sorry.

The rear of our camper is adorned with those oval stickers from places we have STAYED (you know like OBX for outer banks, GC for Grand Canyon and so on)...I don't have a MAP colored in...but I know my kids KNOW that they have BEEN in many many states even if they haven't 'slept' in all of them...and I'm cool with that...

Your results may vary I guess...

Good luck...and remember...

Don't pet the sweaty stuff and don't sweat the petty stuff...

joe.

If you check the legal diffination of applying state stickers to your map you will see to be legal you must both camp one night and bring home one ten pound rock from that state. (See Lucys Long Long Trailer movie for more information)

I have heard many different "rules" that different RVers make up. Some just say they have to spend the night, some must play golf, make love, eat a burger (ribs, ice cream, pizza... whatever their obsession is), go to a museum, state park, national park, or visit the state capitol building. Some think if they spend $ in the state (even for fuel) that qualifies as a "visit". To each his/her own.

PS: Notice the big empty void of Missouri in our map? Dang, can't imagine how we missed it, but we did!

Does it matter? It doen't mean anything, so do what you want to it. Its a bragging tool and some people like to brag more then others.

You make your own rules. If you are having a map-filling contest with your buddy, you must agree on rules

Our map shows the places my wife and I have been together, staying long enough for sightseeing, usually at least overnight, over the past 40+ years. It does not include where only I have been, or only she has been, and it has nothing to do with where the current piece of camping equipment has been.

For international, I fill in my own map, because I traveled more for work, but my bucket list includes taking her everywhere I've been. But she also has a couple of countries on me.

On my camper I fill in the states that the trailer has been in. I have personally camped in almost every state, but I was doing real camping in the backcountry in a tent at a remote location (backpacking). I will backpack in Alaska at Wrangles National Park next August but I will not fill it in on my camper until it has been there. I have no desire to go back to some states like RI and NJ and camp there. Once is enough.

I vote to do away with the maps all together.

Lets put an end to this silliness once and for all.
