For membership parks (like Coast to Coast), the membership is usually LIFETIME, cost in the thousands range. Dues and maintenance fees are annual, hundreds.
Here is a link to Why Buy A Camping Membership
Hi tatest.. The link you gave showed that the memberships can be bought for $595, not thousands... Showed the annual dues, frozen at $99, not hundreds...
Most of todays memberships have an out clause, that states you can sell it, give it away, or just turn it back when you are done using it.. some do require you keep them for 3 or so years..
The lifetime part is to say you can use it for as long as you like, providing you keep your annual dues present...
As far as joining Coast to Coast or RPI, if you don't pay the annual dues, they will drop you, no lifetime contract there...
We have owned two memberships over the years, both said in writing that we can give it away, sell it, or just turn it back... We make sure that clause is in the contract we sign..
One membership we bought cost me $200, and the present one cost me $800.. The first one we bought, the annual dues were $149 and frozen..
The present one, annual dues $240, but we get the first 35/days included with that.. Works out to around $10/day...
True, there are some memberships that cost thousands to join, but you can usually buy "RESALES" for far less.. The present cost to join my home park is around $1200, but resales can be had for less...
With my home park, we can stay as long as we like, for $10.50/day, some stay several months each time they visit the park..

Passport America works for us,& cost $44 a year, made that back after the first 2 stays, it doesn't work for everyone, as some folks only camp in a small local area,& there aren't many CG if any in that area,
also some whine about the restrictions, but if you have the flexability to work around them, it is very worth the money.
The 50% discount is a big deal to us( also retired), & much better than the 10% offered by Good Sam. And unlike a Campground membership,
there is no "Home Campground" requirement, that can cost a lot each year, many of these don't have a lot of CG's, Passport America has 1461 currently, this number fluctuates, but generally stays close to that. There may be times when you can't find one of thier parks exactly where you want to be, but when you throw in State Parks, National Forests, National Park, Corps of Engineer CG's, and Military CG's (if eligible)you can generally find cheaper places to stay.
PS. Don't forget, when you reach 62, to get your America The Beautifull Senior Pass,(formerly Golden Age Pass), it's $10 for lifetime, and gets you 50% discount at the Nat'l. Forests,Nat'l Parks, & COE CG's,and "some" state parks.
