I have over 40,000 miles flat towing my 1997 wrangler behind my Dodge Megacadb 2500 with a 9.5 Alpinelite camper. I use the whole 48 inch Tow beast extension and have traversed all kinds of roads and never had a problem.

Do you have to have any extra braking with the setup?
As for installing the warn kit, at $1200 for the rear axle for my Rubi, it is a bit much.

I use a Towbeast with 24" extension to tow a trailer that's usually between 7K and 8K lbs, and have never experienced any issue at all with side loads on the extension. It just tows along just fine. So I think that the side load chains are over-kill and not needed - but nothing wrong with a little overkill from time to time... I think that a Towbeast would do what you want no question. The biggest issue for an extension is tongue weight - with a flat tow, there is no tongue weight.

joe b. wrote: This past summer I towed my Jeep Wrangler to/from south Florida to Colorado behind my Dodge/camper setup. I installed a Reese Tow Beast with a 41/42 inch stinger. (extension) This hitch has a 2 1/2 inch receiver. Based upon some input from this forum I added some 1/2 inch side chains to help relieve the side loads when turning. Not sure they were needed or not. The trip out and back were trouble free. Just always have to remember it is back there when stopping, turning, parking, getting fuel, etc. With my Cummins, I got about 12.5 mpg towing, instead of my normal 14.8/15 mpg with just my camper loaded at 55 mph for the trip.
I suspect that the Super Hitch is a better product but I found the cheaper Tow Beast hitch to work just fine for me.
Here is a photo of my setup prior to putting the TC on the truck.

Joe,
Just curious, but where did you get the towing yoke on the front of your Jeep? Is that something you purchased, or did you fab it up?
I am also going to have to check with the manufacturer of my aftermarket transfer case (it's a "Monster Box" 3-speed/3-stick unit from STaK 4x4) to see if I can flat tow with it. I have heard rumors that you can't without damaging it badly ... short of removing drivelines, which I would really rather not deal with).

Hi Don,
The truck has a Reese Towbeast Class 5 with 2 1/2 inch receiver, the stinger is a 41/42 inch Reese also. From there back the tow bar is a Roadmaster Falcon 5200 that I originally bought to tow a Jeep Grand behind our Class A MoHo. The cross bar and attachments on the front of the Jeep are from Roadmaster also. http://www.roadmaster-tow-bars.com/towbar_main.php
The "hidden" brackets that attach to the Jeep frame and remain on the Jeep are also Roadmaster. Don't believe they still make the Falcon 5200 but have increased the towing limits on the replacement model. (mine is now about 20 years old)
All these parts and pieces sure add up to a chunk of change but the time a person is ready to tow. LOL The tow brackets were just over $300, the Towbeast hitch and stinger were about $450 www.drawtite-hitches.com and the Falcon tow bar, was about $500. Bought the tow bar from Camping World in Denver. (Wheatridge) Probably close to $1,500 by the time I bought the cables/chains, carabiners, etc.

One advantage to putting your camper on a flat bed is having your hitch receiver accessible.
Here's one of my Jeeps being towed :

Thanks a lot for all of the good info Joe. However, before getting into all of that, I am first going to find out about my transfer case for flat towing (which I would prefer to do over a car hauler/trailer set up).
