Thanks all for your suggestions on sites and reservations. But this is definitely true:

Many of the campgrounds sell out months in advance

I tried to make reservations, but it's Halloween weekend and Hocking Hills is completely full. Not one site left. Even called them to make sure.

Every state park in Ohio has some walk in sites with electric set aside that aren't reserveable. If it's a big weekend like July 4, Mem, Labor Day...you need to get their early on Wednesday and pay for Wed through the weekend (whether you bring your camper or not). I've drove down in my car on Tues and did this and then brought my camper up on a Thurs/Fri with the family. You should have no problems if you are there Wed or even Thursday in October. If for some reason you can't get in there are a ton of private campgrounds in the area that won't be sold out.

A wonderful private campground near the state park is Scenic View. The address is Logan, Oh. and the campground has a website you can look up.
The sites are really nice and the owners terrific.?We stayed there in May of this year

Unfortunately, while I have a little flexability, I can't be there that early. There will be several other families in our group, and some of them have even less flexability. Some other time, I would take a chance on it, but not that weekend with a group.

The problem we're finding is that many of the campgrounds are closing that weekend.

That does look like a nice place. But unfortunately, they close Oct 31. I can make a reservation for Friday night, but they are closed for Saturday night (just like a lot of other places we checked.)

One of the other people in our group found space for us all at Happy Hills in Nelsonville. I've not found much information other than their site, hopefully it will be a reasonable place.

My seasonal site is up near Mohican State Park which is another great area. Mohican/Loudonville is the canoe capital of Ohio with over 1000 boats going into the water every weekend in the summer. You could stay at the state park on any of the dozen or so campgrounds in the area, over 5000 spots available on the river. We went kayaking in the river last year in late October. Water is cold, but we just wore jeans and sweaters, just don't fall in.

Another great area is up near Cedar Point, my favorite on the lake is East Harbor SP, lots of stuff to do in the area. I have heard great things about Geneva-on-the-Lake SP which would be closest to you in NY.

Have you tried Lake Hope State Park? It's just outside of Nelsonville and has quite a few sites available.

Go to the Reservation site that I posted above and you can see what they have.
