I have just returned from a wonderful 3 week holiday on the Oregon Coast and Northern California. This great trip was only marred by a very unpleasant experience at the Petuluma KOA. My site (as well as other sites)had garbage and cigarette butts from previous campers. The shower had many, many ants crawling the walls. The air was foul (cattle feedlot smell) and apparently this is pretty common at this time of year.I left after 2 nights even though I paid for 4 nights. I was not told of this issue when I reserved. The site cost per night was expensive. I am very disappointed and feel that I should pass this on to other RVers.

I am not a fan of KOA but have stayed in this one and never saw or smelled what you are describing. Yours is the 1st bad report on this KOA that I've heard, and if you think the cost was high, move a few miles closer to San Fransisco.

My family has stayed at this campground countless times and have never had an unpleasant experience. As for the smell, it sometimes is a result of the working farm on the property which is explained on an info sheet given at the time of check in. My family has only noticed the smell when we walk down by the farm. We were there about 8 weeks ago and I did not notice garbage, smells or ants.

I live just north of Petaluma. There a lot of dairies in the area and at this time of the year, they are spreading manure for planting the fields. It just depends on which way the wind is blowing...It gets pretty foul at times but doesn't last very long. Unfortunately, there aren't many campgrounds in this part of the county especially if you want to travel to San Francisco. The parks on the coast are better if you want to escape the dairies this time of the year.

We stayed there for several days while exploring SF area. and had an enjoyable time. As for the smell... if you camp in an area with agriculture you have to put up with the smells.
