Our kids always love swimming, but really we try to balance each day with kid activities and family activities. Our kids know that we will drag them on hikes, through museums, and generally try to educate them. They also know we will try to plan time for them to be kids whether that means a pool, water park, lake, activities, or whatever.

I will also say that according to polling the number one contributor to good environmental values is UNSTRUCTURED time in nature. Let the kids figure out what to do. If they camp enough, they will always figure it out.

My kids enjoy margaritas at the end of the day, but they are 25 and 27.

When DS was younger than 10 all he needed to be happy was a stick and some dirt. DD liked swimming, even if it was just splashing in the creek with the dog.

In their high school years we didn't go camping, too many sports activities consuming weekends.

Since we bought the ATVs this year the amount of time we spend with the kids has increased, which was exactly why we bought them.

My teens love meeting the other teens while camping. As my daughter recently said,.. "Mom its like Old Navy had a sale on cute boys! and they are always within site and sound of the campsite." lol

It has been stated several times in above posts...Papa always has time to play soccer, skip rocks, go to the playground, take hikes, pick clover, etc. At home, Papa is busy doing his honey-do chores and has less time to do the above.

Our two boys are now 25 and 20 and they both ask when we are going camping again.

When they were between 15 and 18, the best thing about camping for them was all the space - they stayed home.

For our nearly year old DD, it has to be tasting every single rock/acorn/choke-hazard-sized-object in the campground. Well, that the swings and playing with Dad. Mostly the rocks though.

DDs (now 27) oldest childhood memory was getting bit by a chipmunk while camping at Pfeifer Big Sur SP when she was trying to feed it potato chips. She was 3 at the time. That was her very first camping trip.

Shortly after that I was on the phone with her doctor discussing rabies risk.

MY DS (11.5) likes the late-night walks too. If we're in a SP of course. We find 'somewhere' to go (boat dock, beach, trail, pier, etc.) the first night & then go there nearly every night with flashlights. We look at stars/constellations, shine flashlights across the water, look for ghost crabs on the beach, spider's reflective eyes, etc. Or we turn off the lights & 'listen' to the dark.

Our kids like to sit around the campfire in the evening and drink beer.

They are both in their 40's so we don't have much to say about it.
