You won't get a check engine light on the vehicle from which you are siphoning unless you are running the engine with the fuel cap open. The vehicle system checks for a seal to keep emissions out of the atmosphere, and all your fuel in the tank. So have both engines off during the fueling. That's a good safety measure anyway.

I use one of these: http://www.ezsiphon.com/. It is simple and easy, nothing to wear out. The clamp works good if you need to stop the flow.
Also, I have both sizes and detach the big hose from the pump (in an emergency) and the small hose fits snugly inside the large hose...the small hose pump then goes into the boat gas tank to get gas for the generator.

One thing to remember, you can't poke a tube down all filler openings. Some have baffels, etc. to prevent a siphon hoses from being used. As I said previously, check to be sure it works before you leave home......Then leave home "without the cans".

No, if the fuel system loses pressurization the CEL will illuminate indicating a failed evaporative vapor recovery system. If the fuel cap is opened and the fuel level doesn't increase the ECU assumes a failed evaporative system.

I'm jealous of you people. I have one of the bulb type siphons but have never been able to use it with my van. It apparently has an obstruction in the filler neck to prevent siphoning.
