Last year we met relatives and did caravan for a while. It was fun to visit with my BIL and SIL and we had some "security" while doing the trip. We went different ways after a couple weeks and all were happy to do our own thing.

I do advise doing most of the trip solo. You might find a place you want to "hang in" for a while. You can take your time or move through a place quickly depending on what you want to do. YOu will find you meet lots of people during the trip, and most RVers are friendly and helpful to each other.

We went solo in 2005 and stayed 3 months. Will be going back again in 2009, solo, for another 3 plus months.

Fulltimers. No more grass to cut, no more leaves to rake, and can move if we don't like our neighbors.

States we spent time in, drive throughs not marked.

We are currently planning to make our 12th round trip by RV, to/from Alaska next summer. Should get out of here, south Florida, the first week of June and plan to meet up with my wife's sister and her husband from Portland along the way. The SIL and BIL lived in Anchorage for 17 years but never drove the Alaska Highway. Not that unusual for Alaska residents with RVs. It will be the first trip for us going with someone else, so the logistics of that gives me some anxieties.
I think I still get just as excited as I did the first few trips I made. Do believe I am just an older version of that naive 20 year old country boy, fresh off the ranch. Didn't worry back then in 1962 as I didn't have a clue as to what the trip entailed, except that the Canadians required me to have $300, in pocket, to cross over the border on the way up. In 1964, second driving trip up to Alaska, on the way up, I remember having to stop in Montana and get a job, helping build a saw mill, so that I would have the necessary cash to cross. Three hundred dollars doesn't sound like much money today, but back then it was a struggle for me to save that much (the $300 plus whatever it cost me to get to the Canadian border from Oklahoma)as a full time college student, working nights as a hotel clerk and weekends as a ranch hand. Sure kept my social life down to a manageable calendar. LOL

We plan on going next summer - definitely on our own schedule. We think it should be more relaxing that way. Would be easier to boondock for a few nites when you are not with a group.

We will be heading the other direction next summer. We are retiring from the AF and will be moving back down to the lower 48.

Maybe we will pass some of you on the way.

We went to Alaska to research the Tongass and Chugach National Forests and met numerous fellow rvers using both modes to see that great state. Since, like the old potato chip ad says "One is never enough," most people do Alaska more than once, I would suggest doing it in a caravan for the first time than go solo, tailoring your itinerary to your specific interests, for your next visits. All the professional caravans seemed to allow enough "unsupervised" time to go off on your own and had additional entertainment lined-up but, honestly, there was only one that sounded suited to our interested. It provided a radio to each rv for communication with the "wagon master" who transmitted information about road conditions, geology, history, culture, etc that the groups was passing thru. I must say we saw no caravans while in the Inside Passage/Tongass National Forest - IMHO the best part of state. And I don't think these professional caravans stay in national forest campgrounds - big mistake!

JCGibson,

Won't you miss it up here? WE are in Anchorage tonight. I like the town. We are looking into selling our home in NY and getting a condo or something here.

One might consider a couple of traveling partners to travel with. Keep it on an individual bases as far as what to do and where to go. Do your oun caravan thing and keep it kind of loose and enjoy one an others company, and see that great piece of country.

We're planning on going next year, with a departure date of mid-May. Our oldest son lives in Rapid City, SD and that's where our grandkids live, so a stop for a week or so will be included, then it's off to Banff, the Canadian rockies and the Alaska Highway. Should arrive in AK in late June and plan on staying two months.

fullmoonoversalem,
We will miss it here in the summer. The winters are just too long for us. We are looking at the Boise, ID area so we will still be near the mountains.
I will have a 3 bedroom house 1400 Sqft.Zero lot line for sale in March. :-)
