Kind of addictive, isn't it. The frost on the spruce. Northern Lights. Sun thru the north window at 11 in the evening May thru July. Raspberry color on the mountain snow at sunrise. Belugas in Turnagain Arm. Tidal bores. Moose on the porch.
Try a snow machine or ski trip over Resurrection Pass and use the Forest Service cabins.
Also, take a look at Moose River RV and Auto in Sterling. A lot closer than Anchorage and some of the same capabilities. The RV Parts lady south of Soldotna about 10 miles knows her stuff and has a lot in stock or can get it quick. Dan's Mobile RV goes south for the winter to Arizona, but he does know what he is about.
Enjoy the winter and all it has to offer.

Planning our trip for 2010. Trying to get some of our friends to go with us and make our own caravan. This way we can go our own way when we want. Plan on starting up out of Las Vegas around April and stay as long as the good weather holds. We went in 2005 and had a wonderful time. The scenery and wildlife was wonderful and very addictive.
Have a great time whatever you chose

We went this year and plan to go back next year. I think this time I will drive up with one of the kids and then have DW fly up to Anchorage and meet me since the trip up is a little boring for her to do two years in a row. Plan on taking at least 2 weeks to get to Dawson Creek from central Florida. We took it easy and stayed a couple of nights in places like Nashville and the Badlands/Mount Rushmore area. Try to take in the Calgary Stampede in early JUly if at all possible. When they say it's the "Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth", they aren't exagerating. We went solo, but met tons of wonderful people in the campgrounds, and usually saw them several times, since the runs are fairly well spaced to the better sites. Plan on being impressed and not wanting to return home.

We took 3 months-1 of which was in alaska,Solo-we saw alot of caravans and would never go that way-but next time possibly find someone with similar interests to travel with.Would definitely do alot of dry campin again-Places are everywhere when you know how to look for them. With only a couple people you can get into just about anything without reservations-havin an extra day here and there really helps there.Gas prices & everything else in Canada are outrageous-B.C. means bring cash-Yukon means Yukon come up-just bring money.Alaska isn't actually that expensive since walmart and some of the others have moved in there.Tourist traps still get ya though.Always hit the Vistors centers-Lots of times they saved us with free dump & water stops.Look around gas stations for dumps as they usually let ya dump free if ya buy gas.Everybody we met was extremely helpful & friendly-sorry it'll be a while before we can travel like that again-18,000 miles-$13,500.00 total cost--All those memories...Priceless !!!

We plan on leaving mid-May next year solo, and first time. Have done and still are doing lots of research. Have looked at caravans, but seem too restrictive and do not have all the same interests we have. Hope to see some of you up there.

We're planning to head up to Alaska somewhere around Memorial Day in 2009. We've been up there twice before - in 1998 for the 100th anniversary of the gold rush. We tented that time and were the ONLY occupants at the Muncho Lake cgnd when we went through. The second time was in the winter to see the Iditarod (we flew). This time we're going with another couple in a pair of 5ers with identical TVs. We're allotting 10 weeks and plan to smell quite a few roses along the way. The 5ers will seem like 5-star digs compared to a 6' dome tent!
Watch for the rv.net logo in the rear window and be sure to say hello!

We have been full time for 1 year now and are planning to go solo in 2009. We have a couple of friends who are talking about going with us but I don't think they will actually go.
In some ways I think it is almost harder to decide on when and where to go because we have unlimited time (except for weather) and no real idea what we want to see when we go. Just starting to read our new Milepost and Frommers Alaska 2008 books and of course this forum.
We'll be in southern California for the winter and start heading north as the weather permits. Maybe we'll see some of you on the trip.

We where on our way in Apr of this year with 2 other couples when we had to turn around because of family illness. We where in SD when we turned back. Good choice as we got back to Bethlehem Pa before my mothers condition turn south. She did pass away and we are thankful we got back in time. One of the other couples did make the trip. Our plan was to kind of travel together but go our own way. Kind of a loose caravan. "we'll see you next week at____". That said, we are now in Davenport FL working at Disney and planning on leaving here about mid Feb. We plan to get to AK about the 1st of June. Spend 3 months in AK them take 2-3 months to get to a warn climate for winter 09/10. So far we are going on our own but may meet up with some of you nice folks.

RL Miller,
You will probably meet lots of people on the way. We met people in the lower 48 and saw them at varous places the whole way up. It was fun sharing stories and hearing about which places to see or not to bother with (there weren't too many of those).
We left NY April 15 in 08 and had an eight day stop-over in Indiana for repairs and made our way north. We arrived in Tok May 1 and stayed at the Sourdough Campground. Going early is great! It is beautiful if chilly, but you will see more wildlife, and the countryside looks different than it will in the summer.
We also made the trip in 07 and we could compare the mountains with and with snow covering.
This year we liked it so much we decided to stay. It is currently 18 degrees, but not unpleasant here in Cooper Landing. We ended up spending a lot of money on heavier winter clothes. We didn't bring the "heavy-duty" stuff with us on this trip. Shopping is fun anyway.
