As a follow up, here's what's happened....
I've sold the Firebird and RV. I've thinned out my belongings to a bare minimum. I got $1k for all the stuff as a whole by letting it all go to my now, ex boss, whom also operates the local pawnshop.
I went to a local used car dealership and found a pretty nice 1989 Dodge Dakota 4x4. I picked it up for $1800 out the door. I gave the guy $1500 cash and he's financing the $300 ballance, which will be paid off before I leave.
The truck has just over 200k miles on it, but it's been very well maintained. It has no rust or any major body damage. The clutch is strong, the steering is still tight. Shocks are good and it has no cooling issues. It had a leaking valve cover gasket which I've had repaired so that's not an issue. Everything works. The price was right and I just love this little truck. My confidence level with this rig is very high and I'll have a good day runner when I get back to San Jose. There won't be a need to tow a trailer as the truck can haul everything left that I'll be bringing along.
I don't think the Firebird would have made the trip towing even a small trailer. It has issues with engine vibration and I think it would have lost a rod or main bearing somewhere along the way. I got my $700 out of that car over the last 8 years I owned it.
I feel better about not renting a truck to do this move as that seems like such a waste of money just to get from one place to another. I believe I have a reliable vehicle and my money was well spent on it, not to mention that I have something to show for it
Anyway, that's what's happening and I'll be leaving Omak the week of the 15th.
This means DudesRV.com will be down until I get resettled and get myself a new IP address from which to serve up my site. I expect that it shouldn't take longer than one week to get my site back up again. At that point, I'll be back online and can start looking for a new RV call my home. Life is such an adventure!
My only concern at this point is....will this truck pass the CA smog requirements? I don't know. Everything is stock and original with no engine modifications and it doesn't smoke at all so that's all good. But, CA is very finicky about the smog laws so I guess I'll find out when I get there!
